What fuel does a lawn mower take?

Ok I know that this might sound stupid....but what kind of fuel should I put in the lawn mower?

The engine starts by pulling a rope and it makes the sound of a soil plougher...(sorry for the weird description of the machinery )

Thank you for your help

Re: What fuel does a lawn mower take?

It should take normal cheap gasoline from the station.

On that note- as you probably don't have a little can of gas sitting around, when you fill one up make sure to set the can on the ground while filling it. It's a safety thing.

Other motorized lawn care machines are often 2 cycle motors rather than the usual 4 cycle lawn mowers; these typically need the gas to be mixed with a special oil. Just so you don't get carried away and fry your leaf blower and weed eater for lack of oil (the lawn mower should have an oil sump kind of like your car... and it should have oil in it ).

Thank you for your help,

That doesn't really narrow it down.

But you have three options:

4 stroke (normal car fuel)
2 stroke (normal car fuel with oil mixed) 25:1 (car fuel : oil)
2 stroke 50:1 (car fuel : oil)

usually if it is a "2 stroke" the ratio will be printed on the lid.

If it is "4 stroke" there will be an additional cap to pour oil in.

When you pick up your fuel from the petrol station, ask inside for the small bottle of oil you need to make your 2 stroke oil with.

The ratio is otherwise simple maths.

good luck

You need to look at the "fuel cap"

4 stroke
If there is no "Ratio" on it.... it is most likely a 4 stroke.
Look to the side also to see if there is an additional 'cap' and a 'dipstick' to measure the oil.
Four Stroke for sure then.

2 stroke
Again, if it's printed on the fuel cap, it's a 2 stroke.

The ratio varies a bit, usually by age of the machine, but the higher reving smaller engines usually have the 50:1 ratio.

Both need oil, but the only difference is that you have to MIX the oil with the fuel for a 2 stroke.

That should tell you. It's probably 4 stroke. If it's two stroke the oil ratio should be on the gas cap; if 4, then there should be a marked oil reservoir somewhere.

Yes, perhaps something other than an impressionist watercolour would help us identify the mower. Like a clear photograph. Or the model number.

Well, that looks like a rebadged Craftsman 190cc 21" Briggs & Stratton Rear Bag High Wheels Push Lawn Mower to me.

The Briggs & Stratton 625 Series engine is 4 stroke.

Re: What fuel does a lawn mower take?

I've never come across a 2-stroke lawn mower - the engine would be too racy to cut the grass effectively.

.... but your pic. certainly looks like a normal 4-stroke model - petrol only in the fuel tank.

Just to confuse, it will use oil for engine lubrication, but this will have a separate, smaller filler cap with either "Oil" written or a symbol of an oil can. The level should be checked with the dipstick on the filler cap. Use normal motor oil if topping up is required. Add a small amount and re-check level - repeat as necessary. It's easier to add a little at a time, than a big glug and end up over the max limit.

I remember vividly mowing the grass with a 2-stroke lawn mower that my parents had when I was a kid back in the 60's.
