just wondering if anyone knows of a second hand book store somewhere in or near Zurich that has a good english section? I find Orelli Fussli a good source for new English books but it is very very expensive.

Any ideas would be great

Hi Brian,

They have about 20 feet (6m) of 4-5 level shelves of English books.

I believe they do take trade-ins...don't know how much you'd get for your books though.

Thanks for your help Nick. I was finding it very difficult to justify 50 francs on one particular book I wanted in Orelli.

Most brockenhauses have second-hand english books.

But twice a year, St Andrew's church has a second-hand book sale and it's big. You pay Sfr40 for a migros bag full of books. Everyone I know who goes there buys enough for the year.

The next on is Nov 11th.

I buy plenty from www.ebay.co.uk or from amazon.co.uk market place. Amazon is esp good for heavy books because of the set shipping price per book. But for small books, I find ebay.co.uk to be great. If you find something you like, it's worth asking the seller if they're consider mailing to Switzerland and if you're in no hurry, tell them to send it with surface mail for printed matter.

A brockenhaus or brockihaus is a second-hand shop for furniture etc. They usually take in english books as well. I've found some good classics in the smallest of shops

www.deepdiscountdvd.com is actually a good site for region 1 dvds. I've bought heaps from them. Their shipping isn't free but the prices were cheap enough that it still ended up being worth shopping there. www.dvdboxoffice.com is a canadian store that does deliver free.

BTW - if you do order in bulk, you will be taxed by swiss customs. I usually try to keep my order to less than Sfr60.

The Pestalozzi Library (several branches in zurich but particularly the Raemistrasse branch) have a good selection of English books & DVDs

Hi Everyone

I have been looking for a way, for a long time now, to swap, get rid of, get new books and I have just discovered a great international book swapping website.

The idea is based on points (kind of a batering system). Books sent/received within the same country (1 point). Sent overseas (ie anywhere outside CH) (earn 3 points / pay 2 points to get a book). Every book listed on the site gets 1/10 of a point. I think you also get points for good feedback from people who get your books. And, if you are feeling charitable, you can give your points to charity (so they can get books I guess?).

The only real cost to you is the postage, and if the books are thin and/or dont weigh much, you can benefit from "letter" economy postage costs.

Its a great way not only to swap your books for ones you want, you also find lots of stuff you have never thought of / seen / or can't be found in CH/EU etc.

Hopefully some of you will participate so it is easier and cheaper to swap within CH.

Since there are many books from the UK - the cheapest way I've found is to get stuff sent by surface mail, printed material. If you don't mind waiting for the book. But Royal Mail has some good rates for printed material. There used to be for Swiss Post too, but they removed that a few years ago.

I've not found out any cheap way of getting stuff sent from the US.

I have - the US postal service is by far the cheapest. However - if you actually want to get your book and save yourself the hassle of waiting for something that might not arrive at all then don't use it

Although not in Zuerich, I purchase most of my second hand books in the BücherBrocky in Basel.

They carry about 100 000 books. Mostly used and there are some great bargains to be had. All the books are categorised and there is an English section also.

I've just picked up three paperbacks (used), and a large hardback photography book (new). Price? Fr 20. The paperback books are all in pristine condition.

The BücherBrocky is run by the Salvation Army and is located in Güterstrasse 137 next to the Apple Mac shop.

They also take your old books off you (no payment) and of course all proceeds go to a worthy organisation.

Also good to know is that amazon.de ships for free to Switzerland if your purchase is more than EUR 20ish. They carry all the english titles as well (and if they don't they usually order it for you).
