How much would you expect a nice leather coat to cost in Switzerland?

I complemented a colleague on his leather jacket and it apparently cost < 200 CHF at C&A. I've seen nice ones in Manor too for 500-600 CHF. Both looked a lot nicer than the stuff I see priced in the 1000 CHF plus range. My other half has been looking for one that fits well and isn't too expensive for a while now.
Personally, leather jackets are really a in-between season jacket here and i don't find them warm enough in winter. I seem to freeze unless I wear a down jacket.

I buy my leather coats in Paris. There is this store, run by an Algerian who used to have a store in Geneva...but then relocated to Paris. You can get a decent leather coat for less than 100Eur.

(Biased, I know...). I am not questioning the quality of the stuff you can get here, which I am sure is top, but I cannot bring myself to pay x3 for the same quality.
Having said that, based on what I see, I can tell you that a good quality leather jacket could run in Italy between EUR 100-300, and a coat starting from 200 (simple ones) up to the thousands if we are talking about special treatments, fur finishing, etc. Also go for factory outlets rather than stores: better selection and variety, possibility of customizations upon request, and cheaper prices.
My strategy is to go for quality rather than quantity. I bought a red leather coat, knee-length, in 2000 for around 600 EUR at the time. I've got it professionally cleaned twice in the past 11 years, but the leather is so high quality that it has maintained wonderfully and people still ask me where I bought my new coat, 11 years later!
I can cut budget on a lot of pieces of clothing (I loved the 5 for $5 cotton t-shirts at Target back in the day) but two things I don't skimp on, and that is leather goods and business suits. I just buy less! Good luck

No idea, but as the others said, I wouldn't buy it in here...
I got a wonderfully warm, long, brown leather coat in Germany as a treat last year. Costed me 80 euros in Orsay (got it with 75% discount because the buttons had fallen out ). And it doesn't even make me look like a Russian thug!

Thanks. I don't buy clothes regularly enough to understand what normal prices are but did see a nice coat for sale in Zurich for just shy of 1700 chfs. I checked prices in UK and Italy and it was 950 GBP and 1100 EUR.
Since when did coats cost the same as your monthly rent???

Phil, if you ever fancy a field trip down under, here is where I shop for leather and other stuff such as suits, special occasion dresses, etc (sorry, website in construction, but you can see the opening times). They occupy two buildings with multiple floors, sell various brands, and have their own brand too. Since you can get lost with all the stuff they have, employees greet you and ask you what you need, and give you personalized advice. You will need a car though, as it is out of the main cities.
Alternatively, next time you are down in Milan, try any of these stores specialized in leather clothes (in Italian, leather= pelle). Number 1, Eivissa, is having a promotion on all leather jackets from EUR 99 to 149. Or these guys, a well-known Italian chain specialized in leather. I think they have several stores in Milan.
By the way, just so you know, a half day off + all this leather talk is turning out NOT TO BE a good idea for me !!!

I paid £450 in London 10 years ago & was told it must have cost at least 900CHF, with the exchange rate it was rather more!

I guess I am the only one here who feels differently about this.
To be honest, I am not the one for brands. Neither do I care what others think about what I am wearing. If I like it, I wear it. And I would rather not spend an arm and a leg for some fancy clothes.
Depends on one's choice I guess.
I would rather spend the money on other things...gadgets, games, collectibles...anytime...gladly. | | This user would like to thank TheWolverine for this useful post: | |

Didn't leather coats disappear from shops in 1979?

I am the same. I buy based on the style and quality and actually prefer non-branded where possible, because I sometimes find prominent branding rather vulgar.
