Quickest by car would be the Italian riviera.

Lake Constance on the Swiss/German/Austrian border (~1.5 hours) is also popular, but it's more of a Summer attraction.
French beaches require a longer drive. (~7.5 hours to Marseille)

But lakes can have beaches too. What is a beach? - the bit where the water meets the land. Flattish, stones, pebbles or sand.

I know somebody driving up to London at the weekend. They could drop you at Calais. | Quote: | | | | | What is a beach? - the bit where the water meets the land. Flattish, stones, pebbles or sand. | | | | | Used condoms, dog poo, drug paraphernalia...

Really really wide and flat beaches with soft white sand. And then of course they have better beer than the French. And they know how to do moules. And don't get me started on the "coffee". I love it there. I recommend checking out Blankenberge.
Considering driving versus Easyjet, you might find flying is both cheaper and less hassle. Alicante is a good airport to fly to. You can actually walk from the airport to the beach (technically you can in Barcelona too, but its much more of a hassle, and that particular bit of beach isn't that nice).
Also consider Nice and Marseille.

Just at the back of Altenrhein airport

The closest part of the Med is the Italian Riviera... but my wife for example was completely disappointed by it as it isnt sandy. I'd recommend to drive one hour longer to the Cote d'Azur. Nice, Antibes, Cannes...

| | | Re: Does somebody knows the nearest beach from Basel area?? | Quote: | | | | | Lake Constance its a lake...not a beach. | | | | | Ahh, much similar sentiment to what I feel myself every time I go to the lakes here. Don't get me wrong, in the dog days of summer, it really is nice to get into some very chilly water and go for a swim, beach or not.
But
It's just not the same. | Quote: | | | | | But lakes can have beaches too. What is a beach? - the bit where the water meets the land. Flattish, stones, pebbles or sand. | | | | | | Quote: | | | | | ................... | | | | | I suppose that's one of those subjective things, like "love" and "friendship" ... what a beach IS perhaps depends a bit upon what you're used to expressed as being a beach. | | The following 2 users would like to thank Peg A for this useful post: | | |
