I wasn't thrilled with what I saw in furniture shops here; particle board, more modern than I like - so I had several pieces custom made by a local furniture maker.
I was surprised that the price for a solid hardwood, one-off, heirloom-quality piece was no more - and often less - expensive than what one found in the middle-range to better furniture stores. Outstanding quality at a reasonable (for Switzerland

) price. Plus you are supporting a local business - and supporting a craft that is dying out in this age of factory production.
I don't know of anyone in Vaud, nor do I know the term in French - but if it's any help, the German is Möbelschreiner. There are several such little business here in my area, I would imagine you'd find similar in yours. Look for a furniture maker whose style you like, most will happily adopt a standard piece, or create something special for you.
Good luck!
