Searching for massive/solid wood furniture

Hello all,

Apologize if this is the wrong forum for my question....

I'm looking for shops selling solid wood furniture, such as cabinets for clothing. So far I've searched the usual suspects I know of, such as Conforama, Pfister and such (I didn't even bother with IKEA) and have not found anything that doesn't include some particle/press board construction where screws and other fittings go.

I live in Vaud but am not limited to that area so any recommendations are welcome.

Thanks

Re: Searching for massive/solid wood furniture

I wasn't thrilled with what I saw in furniture shops here; particle board, more modern than I like - so I had several pieces custom made by a local furniture maker.

I was surprised that the price for a solid hardwood, one-off, heirloom-quality piece was no more - and often less - expensive than what one found in the middle-range to better furniture stores. Outstanding quality at a reasonable (for Switzerland ) price. Plus you are supporting a local business - and supporting a craft that is dying out in this age of factory production.

I don't know of anyone in Vaud, nor do I know the term in French - but if it's any help, the German is Möbelschreiner. There are several such little business here in my area, I would imagine you'd find similar in yours. Look for a furniture maker whose style you like, most will happily adopt a standard piece, or create something special for you.

Good luck!

Re: Searching for massive/solid wood furniture

There is a small store in Neuchatel, next to the Carrels bus stop (rue de Draizes), that sells only wood furniture. The prices are high, but if you want something hand-crafted, they might be a good choice.

Re: Searching for massive/solid wood furniture

Look in the local marché aux puces for solid second hand furniture, and menuisiers for carpenters,

Re: Searching for massive/solid wood furniture

There's an EF-er who builds really nice massive wood furniture. Can't recall the user name at the moment- will try to dig up the thread that displayed some of his work.

Re: Searching for massive/solid wood furniture

Depending on the design and wood you would like, I may be able to help you. I am an Australian carpenter who designs and makes solid wood furniture as well as some renovation and installation (terasse decks, massiv wood flooring) projects. I use a combination of reclaimed and new wood depending how rustic (or not) on the piece. Please see www.noonwoodwork.com (the website is currently getting some updates so it is a bit messy at present). Or Big Thanks and recommendation of EF member for a reference project.

Re: Searching for massive/solid wood furniture

Locally to Vaud I only know of the La Meublerie du bois de l'ours in Les Rousses which is just over the border into France beyond St Cargue - they do deliver, but I had to pay the customs duty at the crossing on the way.
Website at http://www.meublerie.com/

Otherwise you can try the ski areas which supply chalet furniture and there is a large retail outlet on the outskirts of Annecy, but can't remember its name or find it on the internet now. THere is also an outlet of Magasin Bois et Chiffons near Annecy which had a website at http://www.bois-et-chiffons.fr/

Re: Searching for massive/solid wood furniture

Wow. Oh wow.

(Planning a trip over St Gallen way... Unfortunately I really shouldn't add anything new without getting rid of something first. Oh, for a bit more space!)

Yes, head to France. I would also suggest the Ours place in Les Rousses. There is also Interiors, in Etoy that I mentioned in another thread, there is one in CH but it is based in France. www.interiors.fr There are some others in France as well, have to look them up.

Re: Searching for massive/solid wood furniture

Also check out some of the charity organisations which sell really large but beautiful wooden furniture.
Caritas in Geneva or Emmaus had a warehouse with incredible furniture in it, as so many people want the Ikea look.
My friend got the most amazing cabinet

I was just reading this thread to help me with my own search for furniture and found a website for the retail park just outside Annecy which I think moosealot was talking about: http://www.grand-epagny.com/
I have wedding money burning a hole in my pocket and a desire to start investing in some decent furniture so think I'll be paying a visit soon!
