Help me choose a program and school for an MBA

Hi everyone,

I would really need some pieces of advise regarding the next step of my career.
I am a young professional working in Zurich. I want to continue my studies in Business Administration. I already have a BSc Degree but I do not have many years of experience so I am looking for a Master or Junior MBA in Central Switzerland. My future plans are to work in international sales and trading and later open up my own company. I have good networks in Europe and Asia and continuously looking for new opportunities.

I really want to study but there are so many schools and programs so it is very difficult for me to choose. I want to make a good decision and find an excellent university which provides either online or part-time program so I can work and study at the same time. Furthermore, the program should be recognized by international companies both in Switzerland and internationally.

Thank you very much for your kind help in advance. Your support is highly appreciated.

I look forward to hearing your suggestions

Very best regards

George

Re: Help me choose a program and school for an MBA

you just missed the QS World MBA Tour, but you should check out their website www.topmba.com. they list all kinds of schools and can direct you with your search criteria to schools that might fit the best.
Honestly though, I think you need to do the research yourself a bit more. You seem very vague about what you want and only know that it has to be an MBA, part time or online. Well that will cover a ton of schools in CH, EU and other parts of the world.
I m enrolled at HSG (University of St. Gallen) at the moment with the part time option, so are 2 or 3 other members on EF as well. You can PM me if you have questions to that particular program, but I do ask you to please read their website if you are interested first. It is pretty comprehensive.

how long have you been in Switzerland? honestly wanting to study in english will be very difficult in the german speaking part of switzerland. you'll probably find every university offering mba programms only in german, therefore you'll have to take a one year preparatory course in german before admission.

Re: Help me choose a program and school for an MBA

otherwise you could consider an english speaking university like International University of Switzerland :

http://www.iuswitzerland.ch/studypro...aster_mba.html

which is private by the way and all students must be proficient in english.

Re: Help me choose a program and school for an MBA

Hi Real:
Hard topic. I did my research. The highly recognized schools are too expensive for one's pocket (if you have to pay by yourself, which is my case). These are over 60k CHF (i.e. S.Gallen), and the "not that expensive" ones, are not as international/english as you might want.
One exception could be the MBA HEC Lausanne which I heard, is a good one, but the problem is that, since 2011, they are charging around 35k chf, instead of 26k as it used to be, one year ago. But besides these two options I havent found any good combination of price/quality. I say it again: That can be only my case, cause I would have to pay by myself, and the total fee is an important variable in my equation....
just my two cents.

Re: Help me choose a program and school for an MBA

For sure IMD is the best choice, I totally agree but they require even more years of experience and provide only full time program as far as I know. Good schools are rather expensive but seem to be a good return on investment opportunity I think.

I would pay also the school by myself but most of the universities offer good loans and scholarships. I would even consider some business courses at the moment which are recognised by international companies and then make a competitive MBA. The decision is difficult it is why I am asking for help.

Don't waste time & money on MBAs that are not top tier, is not worth it. Better wait for the right moment.

Re: Help me choose a program and school for an MBA

I agree. I went for the introduction course of the Strathclyde MBA in Zürich. The Lady also suggested to aim the top 50 business schools (Financial Times Ranking) worldwide. However, these universities are definitely expensive.

Anybody has relevant information and experience of the SMC Zug? The school provides online course but I have not heard much about it?

Re: Help me choose a program and school for an MBA

When comparing the cost of an MBA remember to factor in the salary you forego in the year of study. The difference in fees then is a smaller proportion of the total cost so an extra 20k fees might be double fees but just a 20% increase in total cost

And I can't miss the opportunity to do the MBA joke....

"how do you know when someone has an MBA?"

They tell you!

You might consider an MAS in Management Technology and Economics at ETH. Cheaper than an MBA, in English and part-time.

Re: Help me choose a program and school for an MBA

You can choose from a broad range of courses in the areas of Management/finance (Strategic Management, Supply Chain Management etc, Marketing, HR Management, Accounting for managers, financial management, corporate finance, ), Technology (Management Information Systems, Innovation management etc) or Economics (Macro/micro, resource and environmental economics, economics of climate change, econometrics etc).

Participants have a technical background (Engineering, Architecture etc). Mostly people in their 30s. Some courses are Podcast so you can follow these without attending. (3-4 courses each semester).

Re: Help me choose a program and school for an MBA

Sounds great. However, I think I am a bit young for this course as I am still far away from my 30s. I would need a Master or Junior MBA which do not require many years of experience.

Well, there are younger people as well. You need an Msc in Engineering (exceptions can be made) and 2 years working experience to apply.
