New hobby: Metal detector treasure hunt

Hey everyone... I've decided I'd like to purchase an ACE 250 (beginner) metal detector from a local dealer. I'm just wondering if anyone else can share their experiences with this hobby or if anyone has some good advice & hints they can share. Thanks

Re: New hobby: Metal detector treasure hunt

I inherited an ancient Whites metal detector from my grandfather when I was small. It must have been made just after transistors became cheap (this thing is ooold). By modern standards it is probably not much more than a toy (it was a high end model when it was made), but my brother and I found all kinds of stuff with that thing. We lived on the coast so plenty to find on the beach; but the coolest stuff came from the ~250 year graveyards. Old old belt buckles, buttons, handles (I guess from the coffins ); we didn't give it much thought at the time but probably shouldn't have taken that stuff. Also lots of old forts and battle grounds from various wars (South Eastern U.S. coast), so more buckles and buttons and bullets and such.

It finally broke down and I've been meaning to get another ever since, it's a ton of fun finding stuff. That one should be waterproof (the coil that is), so you can fish around in the water at the edge of the lake, banks of rivers, people lose stuff all the time. Go for it!

Used one of these when I was a child, at the beach. Fun to just explore. I remember reading an article once about treasure hunting with these, if you really want to get into it, then scour historical docs (newspapers, old locals) and find out where major events might have been held in pastures or woods. People always drop stuff and these types of gathering places are suppose to be great for finding lost coins, etc.

Re: New hobby: Metal detector treasure hunt

Have to be carfull running around with a minedetector, I would check first with the Gemeinde where you want to go prospecting or at least find out who owns the land and get permission from them.
And donīt forget minedetectors sometimes find mines:-)

Re: New hobby: Metal detector treasure hunt

Hey guys! Thanks a lot for your answers. So most of you have only tried in your native country? Not here in Switzerland? We haven't purchased the ACE 250 yet... I'm still unsure about the laws... from what I understand, the use of a metal detector is allowed in Germany, Austria and Switzerland but you need to ask the owner of the land. So Gemeinde, farmer, etc. You do need a permit if you plan to check out archaeological sites and apparently the law also depends on what canton you are living in. So, as usual, not a very straight forward answer We will be visiting the people selling the detectors (cheapest place I found on the net is near my in-laws in Buchs... they also sell on Ricardo (http://mactronik.ch/index_schatzsuche.html)) They'll be giving us a demonstration before we purchase... just don't know how that will work with all that snow right now *lol* I plan to post a video once we do purchase it and will keep you up to date Have a great weekend!

Re: New hobby: Metal detector treasure hunt

Hi there,

I was just wondering if you could tell me where you are purchasing this ace 250? and if it is not too much to ask how much? I did a bit of research and the garret ace 250 s are meant to be awesome little all round machines! I have recently moved here and am wanting to have a quick look around for some treasure I have been looking for a place to purchase a detector and am interested in the ace euro addition.

I am also interested in finding out how you went with your hunting and the areas in which you have been looking in.

any info would be appreciated

Good Luck and happy hunting

Re: New hobby: Metal detector treasure hunt

I just recently read an article ( I don't now know where) in which it stated that treasure hunting in the above sense is illgal in CH. So be careful.

Re: New hobby: Metal detector treasure hunt

Cheers Busby,

Treasure hunting as i referred to it is just a fun way to look for old coins.... I appreciate the heads up though. I have read that there are no rules as such on using a metal detector here in CH just do not do it near heritage sites and gain permission from the land owners before you begin.

If you do remember where you read this information though I would be interested in reading it.

Thanks once again for your warning

New hobby: Metal detector treasure hunt

Hi, my name's Andreas. I live in Grabs SG and one of my new hobbies is hunting for coins.
I was upset about the high prices for metal detectors by the swiss dealers. I have decided to sell products from Garrett. So I became a dealer for metal detectors. If you have any question about my products don't hesitate to ask me.
Regards
Andreas

Re: New hobby: Metal detector treasure hunt

This is a reply to the person asking about where I plan to purchase the Ace250 ... I posted the link above from mactronik in Buchs/Grabs area. They really go have the best prices I've seen. They also sell sometimes on Ricardo... now only to scrape together the cash to finally try out this new hobby
