I studies medicine in South America, and had the opportunity of working with students from the US and they were completely unprepared and did not have much experience in dealing with patients. Having said that, maybe that was just my experience, but having been to the doctor in the US and here I would definitely go to Med School here in CH. The question would be...the language?
Those were the students that couldn't get into medical school anywhere
in the US.

Isn't the OP a female?
Oops sorry about that...not sure how I drew that conclusion! Had the same thing happen to me when I started posting here as it seems its unlikely for a female to be a "geek".....so perhaps equally unlikely for a female to be "cranky"

You know those stupid movies involving slacker US students going to medical school in places like the Caribbean? There's a fair grain of truth in their academic skills. I deal every day with science/engineering professors and graduate students, mostly from Switzerland and Europe. Shall I regale you with stories that will leave you with the distinct impression that a shockingly large number of them are idiots? Sadly, it's true.

Re: Medical school

I studied medicine in South Africa and am now working here as an Assistenzaerztin with amazing little admin issues (very unusual for Switzerland).
If you have a work permit (via your Swiss husband) and speak one of the local languages fairly well you would be able to work here with a US degree. If you want to get 'a Swiss Medical Degree Anerkennung/Recognition' though - you would have to sit the exams after 3 years of working in Switzerland. But this is not vital to work here as an Assistenzarzt.

If you study in Switzerland you have to write the US Exams to work there. But as you said, these seem to be quite passable and after 6 years of Swiss Medical School should be doable.

At the moment, Switzerland is desparate for Doctors and finding training posts (as an Assistenzarzt) are not difficult. From the working conditions here I don't see that changing in the near future either.

Hope this helps. If you have any more particular questions, feel free to ask me - I was in a similarish situation not too long ago and I know gathering the correct info is not easy.

Re: Medical school

My wife is a doctor and we tried for her specialization here. We found that the course not as difficult as in many other countries and also you save good amount here.
We had to drop our plan as there was no scope to directly get admission for specialization and 2ndly she is not so good in German.

Hi everyone,
I'm an American, hoping for some advice about medical school from someone who is a bit familiar with both the Swiss and American systems. I have a Bachelor's degree in biology and am interested in going to medical school. The original plan was to go in the U.S., where a bachelor's degree is required before enrolling. However, now that I am married to a Swiss citizen, I am eligible to go to school in Switzerland.

The big advantage of going in Switzerland is that the schools here are (comparatively) easy to get into, and much, much, much cheaper. It also sounds, from speaking to students, that student life for med students is more relaxed here.

The disadvantages are that school here is 6 years, vs. 4 in the U.S.; that the other students would be about 18 (I would be 25); that the school is in German (I do speak it but of course not as well as I speak English); and that it is located in Switzerland--where my family and friends are not. (As my user name implies, I'm not completely in love with CH. It's certainly not terrible, but...not my favorite place either.)

Either way I think I would have to take two licensing exams if I want to be able to practice in both the U.S. and CH

Does anyone have an advice, especially maybe about the quality of education in both places, that would make my decision easier?

Or to those of you who are not in medicine...would you spend 5 years away from home to save $160,000 in student loans?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hello Kranky-Expat and Hello everyone else

I am just wondering - Did you attend this year`s exam for medical school?
I am very keen about studying medicine and I have tones of questions and I dont even know where to begin !!

did you purchase the last year exam paper to get familiar with the entry-test?

Whats is this entry-test about? IQ? or about medicine?

I read all the posts on this thread and its bringing tears to my eyes. Is it that bad and hard to study medicine in Switzerland?

I am a mature student....well ok, maybe even older than mature but I have passion for medicine

Thank you all
