We have an old (1986) Nikon SLR camera with a couple of lenses, flash etc. We no longer use it.

I am told there are plenty of shops in the UK which would happily take the camera to resell and a quick look at the internet seems to confirm the same. Unfortunately, we are not planning any trips to the UK soon.

Is there anywhere that I can do the same here (Basel area) or is it just for the recycling dump?

It depends a little bit on how much you want to get out of it. I had a quick look on eBay UK and based on completed sales it looks like the body itself is worth around CHF30-40 if you're lucky. So unless you're really commited to getting some money out of the camera, selling it is likely to be a lot of work for not a lot of money.

It's probably the same story with the flash, as most people now want flashes that will communicate directly with their AF SLRs.

The lenses, though, will almost certainly have some value and are very easy to sell. If you don't mind posting the items abroad, I'd probably stick all the various bits and pieces on eBay in the UK and take your chances. I would definitely split the kit, though -- you'll get more money for the pieces than for the collection as a whole.

have to concur... not much money... much work. I have two SLRs I tried to sell before moving here and couldn't even get a nibble just trying to sell them for $35 USD each (even though I paid 20x that amount).

the 35mm age is over... we'd have better luck selling 8 tracks at a flea market.

The way I see it, I'll happily hold on to my SLRs until they reach antique status and then have my grandkids take them to a road show and get $10000s for them.

Sounds like a nice practical camera outfit for someone. Film photography is still very much alive in Switzerland. This camera has just the right level of automation for someone who wants to get a start in manual focus film photography. Manual flashes are tricky to find too. You won't get a fortune, but someone could be really happy with this and get serious use out of it. You could try selling it on EF too.

As it happens, I am (relatively) time rich (stay at home mum) and cash poor, so it's certainly worth my while to list the items on ricardo .. would it be better to list the items separately on ricardo - like Village Idiot suggested for ebay?

I would put them on Ricardo, with a for 10 day listing, individually, making sure you state 'see my other items', and offer a discount for combined postage.

Make sure the lenses have the F number listed. Have a look at ebay Germany for examples of the same camera. Probably worth setting the starting prices for slightly under what they sell for on ebay germany. I would list the flashes last, with a low price, so someone can have them added in if they win a lens, etc.
