Hand/Foot Warmers?

Hello -

We are taking the family skiing next week and I am looking for hand and foot warmers. They are little packets that warm up once you expose them to oxygen. They are usually filled with a fine sand-like product. We bought some last weekend at Jumbo for sledding and they worked great but now need more and my local Jumbo is now out of them. Any other thoughts of where I could find these in a hurry (we leave on Saturday)?

Thanks!

Re: Hand/Foot Warmers?

Migros Sport sells them individually for around 1fr or in a packet of ten for about 9fr.

Re: Hand/Foot Warmers?

Does anywhere have reusable ones? Years ago I had some that contained a kind gel, that once activated heated up and the gel turned hard. They could then be boiled in a pan to return them to gel state and they could then be reused.

Do they still exist?

Re: Hand/Foot Warmers?

When I was a kid we used to have Zippo hand warmers ... fill them up with fuel from your dads can of lighter fuel.. touch off the tinder.. stuff it in your pocket and you're good to go...

and I was amazed to find out they still sell em

yes they exist, but are sold mostly as cute accesories. Tschibo has them as regular recurring items, I think I have seen them in Migros and Coop as well, but with kind of the girly things. You will just have to keep your eyes open when browsing through stores, there are other places that sell them too, but I cant think of where I saw them last

Re: Hand/Foot Warmers?

Aldi have (probably "had" by now), warm sole inserts for ski boots (cutable to size), wired to a rechargeable battery pack, which is carried in a pocket.

Re: Hand/Foot Warmers?

This talk of Zippo hand warmers reminds me of the old solid fuel handwarmers that I had growing up... Talk about warm! And they lasted all day...

VI, how would you light that?.. just touch off the fuel and let it smoulder?

Yes, that's exactly how you'd light it. You get one end of the fuel stick glowing (takes about 30 seconds with a cigarette lighter), then pop it into the case. The fuel sticks generally last about 5-6 hours, and the hand-warmers get *very* warm -- almost uncomfortably so. I always stuck mine in a pouch so it wasn't too hot...

Absolute lifesavers when camping / skiing / etc. Hadn't thought of it in years until someone mentioned the Zippo one...

Re: Hand/Foot Warmers?

that was me... the Zippo ones could get uncomfortably hot as well... I usually used mine when ice fishing ( how stupid was that ) and I'd move it from pocket to glove - glove to boot..boot to pocket

of course that was back in the days before I discovered Schnapps.

MAXIBAZAR carries the reusable ones. CHF 2.95 each.

There is one store in the Swiss-German area http://maxibazar.ch/mag/index.php
