| | | Help - need ideas for costume urgently.
Okay it's not life or death but I would appreciate some ideas as I've been wracking my brains and have so far failed to come up with anything halfway decent.
Son is going on Skiing trip with school on Monday for the week. He came home yesterday (nothing like giving plenty of notice huh) and informed me that on the last evening there will be a big party where everyone has to dress up. The theme is Films/Hollywood and I really can't think of anything remotely suitable.
It can't be anything that requires loads of props as he'll have to take it with him in his suitcase but he wants something novel and entertaining. I have got a sewing machine and am quite handy with a needle and thread so would be up for making an outfit but time is short as it would have to be made by Sunday evening and I am really lacking in inspiration.
Please help give me some ideas as google is really not being my friend at the moment.
All suggestions greatly appreciated. |

Takes a bit of construction......but going as a 'shower' (like in the original Karate Kid film) is always a winner.

A loin cloth wont take up much space. (sorry)
Afterthought: joking aside - long, light coloured thermal underwear (top and bottoms), a chamois leather (or cheaper equivalent) tied round the waist, lightweight gym shoes, flip flops or bare feet (will have to remember not to tread out fag ends, though), long hair wig and chest wig.
Would certainly be novel at this time of year.
You're lucky that it's carnival time as there are costumes and accessories easily available in the shops.

Terribly unimaginative but a big cape + fake vampire teeth and blood + white powder = Dracula | | This user would like to thank summerrain for this useful post: | |

Take two new white fluffy hand towels. Mask white parts with newspaper and masking tape and spray paint two horizontal gold stripes onto the white towels, one across chest, one across thighs (Most towels have a flat stripe top and bottom, spray this part)
Do the same with long white socks. And spray paint wide leather belt. Paint sword.
Sew 2 towels together at shoulders and the sides, armpits down to thighs.
Find green plastic Ivy at flower shop, and thin wire. Buy 3 strands of Ivy, & make a laurel wreath to go on head. Gold painted plastic sword is optional. Gold belt optional. sandals optional.
Boy is now dressed as a Roman soldier. Maybe wear a long sleeved white T shirt and shorts underneath as well?

I don't know why this thread is in the Off Topic section of the forum. This is daily life for many families in Switerland at the moment. Everyone is out there looking for costumes since Faschnacht kicks off next week. I'd like to thank Swiss Cheddar.

I might just look into this one it would certainly make him a talking point and there are prizes for the best, most imaginative, funniest etc costumes. | Quote: | | | | | costume = the mummy

done. | | | | | Well as it happens we do have quite a lot of hospital gauze in the cupboard (don't ask) and they have got a test on ancient Egypt and the technique of mummification this morning so it would be topical. Could take him a while to get ready though and he'd better remember to leave a stategically placed hole in case of emergencies. (either that or not drink anything for a few hours) | Quote: | | | | | dress shirt + cardigan /cape + eyeliner for scar + twig wand = Harry Potter | | | | | He's got the glasses already and we have a wizard's cape somewhere too so another great option. | Quote: | | | | | I don't know why this thread is in the Off Topic section of the forum. I'm sure a mod will be along soon to rectify my mistake if they deem it necessary.
Seriously thanks to everybody who has contributed ideas they are all great and it has given me plenty of ideas to work on. Son's contribution yesterday was a smurf (he'd watched the movie with his niece at Christmas) and I was thinking WTF how am I supposed to make that. Now I've got loads of other options which will be way easier to make.
The shower thing made me laugh out loud but I'm pretty sure it won't fit in his suitcase.

Re the correct place for this Thread -
I don't really like things like this in Daily Life as that should be for things which 'are' or 'have happened' in Switzerland. However, it is certainly not Off Topic - Mums are often confronted with this sort of problem, usually, as here, to be solved at short notice! Sometimes it's the ideas which are lacking, sometimes it's where to get the bits and pieces one needs. EF at your service.

An easy one to do that wouldn't cost too much money, would be paparazzi.
There are so many things you can do, I love fancy dress parties time to let your imagination go crazy, I once went to 9 different fancy dress parties in one year and didn't wear the same outfit once hehe.
This was when we went to the Movember party and we dressed as a pride of lions, was a good night in town afterwards hehe. |

Good luck in finding a costume though.

I once went to a fancy dress costume party (theme film characters) and didn't have a clue for an outfit. So I said I'd just go as myself as I was too late to get anything, then had a brainwave. Grabbed a pair of braces, white T shirt, long coat from a housemate, a beeni hat and a pair of sunglasses. Grabbed a houseplant on the way out.
I won first prize.
