PPL - Private Pilots Licence/Glider - around Zurich / Germany

HI,

I have recently come to Switzerland and am looking to undertake my Private Pilot licence over the next year or two.

Does anyone have any advise on good places to do this, has anyone investigated the best approach in terms of cost/quality?

Is it an option to go across to Germany or even Austria?

**********************************************
In addition I am considering doing gliding first, learning control and overall flying skills in glider before moving onto small aircraft.

Can anyone advise on doing this in Zurich area or across boarder?

Has anyone done this?

Entire course with training, test and license fees can cost 22-25k for PPL.

Re: PPL - Private Pilots Licence/Glider - around Zurich / Germany

I have both a PPL (with some 500 hours since qualification) and a paragliding license. Both are great. But the fun and convenience aspect of paragliding is much higher in my opinion. Flying for 3 hours plus over the mountains and glaciers of Wallis at the price of just a cablecar ride and equipment depreciation is hard to beat.

Thanks, I was thinking more engine-less plane glider than a paraglider.

Part of my thinking was cost and convenience but its an and not an or! PPL would allow me to truly take part in some flying events which I have enjoyed as partial passenger in the past

That is very high, far higher than in many countries.

Part of my question is if it is an option to learn in Germany as I suspect this would be far cheaper!

My husband made his PPL at the Flugplatz Birrfeld (we live in Zurich-West and it's about a 25 min. drive) and he's very fond of everything: school, teacher and the surrounding. Very family-friendly place, too See here: http://www.birrfeld.ch/.

I am currently living in Brasil and was thinking of doing my ppl here before returning to Zurich next year. The price here is around 10000chf which looks like half of what it would cost in Zurich. My question is whether the brasilian ppl would be accepted in switzerland and if not what additional documentation/add on training would be required.

The OP asked for a PPL-C as in glider... I got mine for next to nothing cause I was part of a glider club in Germany. If you take it from there is a PPL-B for power gliders pretty cheap as well. At least in Germany were the licenses not independant, but if you had a C or B were the costs for the small aircraft ("A") one then significantly cheaper as you did not have to take as many lessons.

Learning gliding in a club is the most common way to do the sport as you actually need a team for it... in a club do the trainers usually work for free, so the license costs you only the fees for the flights which was very cheap - some cents per minute and a monthly club membership which was all in all way cheaper than my piano lessons at the same time.

Unfortunatley does this sport mean a lot of comitment in terms of time - your weekend is basically gone. Which is in essence why I stopped it. There are plenty of clubs in Switzerland, when I lived in Winterthur was there a fairly busy glider airfield nearby. I guess that is "around Zurich".

On a side note is Switzerland probably more expensive than Germany... as always. If you do want to go directly for small aircrafts - I'd make the license overseas. I know a Swiss guy who spent two vacations in South Africa to do so. The savings on the flight costs and lessons easily set off the costs to travel there... and there are probably worse ways to spend a vacation.

Ditto here. I stopped gliding in about 1995 because I didn't have enough time for this fascinating hobby. Gliding really means commitment in terms of learning and time.

If you don't mind travelling a bit from Zurich on the weekends, the Gliding Club of Zurich is located in Buttwil AG. The small (and challenging) Airfield is beautifully situated on the hillside of the Lindenberg. If you join the club, you'll get the flying lessons for free.

Re: PPL - Private Pilots Licence/Glider - around Zurich / Germany

There is www.fgzo.ch (Zurich Oberland) and they have both Motor and Glider membership.

For Motor, although resident in CH, I personally needed to do Theory (PPL Motor) in England (with BAZL permission, over vacation(s)). Only German and French PPL-Theory existed in CH at the time. I did all the training, and Practical Proficiency (incl. Exam) in CH with an English speaking Instructor/Examiner. The subsequent newer English Language Proficiency Test was nevertheless easy in CH. :-) [This Test is arguably the only time I have had an advantage of a native Swiss person whilst in CH!]

One arguably can save costs by doing the training abroad now JAR is more broadly recognized/adopted, however you will still (normally) need to go through some Check-rides locally before being allowed to Charter.
However there is nothing like "learning (and integrating) in the environment that you are most likely to be in", and CH (for me) is something special in many many many ways (especially from the air)!

Re: PPL - Private Pilots Licence/Glider - around Zurich / Germany

Thank you for the information, and I agree that getting licensed here gives not only better integration but is also an unique experience, unconquerable to other European places. However 20k CHF is a bit of an overkill, considering that in UK it's £7k on average, and in US around $10k. I might look around and see what options are there. I suppose anything below 15k CHF could be considered

Well, the numbers (costs) you are quoting, are IMHO marketing numbers. The true costs will be a lot higher. But nevertheless, good luck, and "many happy landings"!!

Can I ask you, what are the vision requirements for PPL ?

Re: PPL - Private Pilots Licence/Glider - around Zurich / Germany

Hi,

I'm about to move to Switzerland this year (Basel area). Last year I started gliding training in local flying club in my home country & I would like to continue flying also abroad. My experience isn't really impressive although I achieved the level on which I'm allowed to fly solo in aerodrome circuit (after winch launch).

Could you recommend any gliding clubs in Basel area or Germany with reasonable fees and within acceptable distance from the city?
