Geneva or Nyon ? [Deciding Location]

Hello L&Gs

I'll be working very close to the airport of Geneva and was wondering where to look for an accomodation.

Commuting wouldn't be an issue at all for me, so . . .
Does anybody can give me some tips (also Commun tax wise, GE or VD?) ?

I was thinking of the Vernier or around the airport area OR Nyon area . . .

Who can help me ?

Dunno about Geneva but I've got a mate living in Nyon.

A nice picturesque town with good transport links (motorway and rail) to Geneva.

It's quite 'quiet' but then this IS Switzerland. Plus it's full of English-speaking expats.

Hello Linus_plus

I live in Geneva (at the mo), and it is a lovely city. If you are looking for city life, Geneva is the right place. Plenty of english everywhere. If you are looking for quiet life, Nyon may suit you better, smaller, quaint etc. Not sure about the tax differences, perhaps someone else can help? Please note, Geneva housing demand and rent may be higher than Nyon, just something to consider. If you decide to live in Geneva, you will also find that rent is cheaper towards the airport area versus towards the old city and lake. If you have any more specific questions, feel free to PM me

Thanks Gav,

do you know about your friend experience concerning night/early morning transport links from Geneva ? I'm thinking of them after partying in the city . . .

Cheers,

I like the sound of it : "Noctambus for the party animals". . . I guess I'll use it a lot, after carefully check TICKET guidelines, terms and conditions. . . I believe avoiding fines is a sign of intelligence

INNIT Govna ?!?

Cheers,
Linus

Re: Geneva or Nyon ?

Hi

I live in Nyon and commute to work in Geneva, near the airport. It takes about 20mins to 40mins from door to door depending what time in the morning you leave and the traffic. A lot of people do this journey in the morning so there can be a lot of traffic depending what time you leave.
Also the train from Nyon to Geneva airport is about 20mins and depending where you work you maybe able to work or take a shuttle.

Nyon is a nice place to live, very pictureques in the old town, especially in the spring or summer, but is quiet in the winter months. It is great if you are an outdoor person, you can just hop on your bike and go cycling at the weekends or evenings. If you are more of a party person you might prefer to live in Geneva, there is more action going on there, which is 20mins on the train/car from Nyon .

Geneva tends to be more expensive to rent...and i think it is hard to find an appartment with a lift and/or parking there, which personally would drive me nuts with shopping bags. In a way if you live in geneva there is no point using a car to go to work, but maybe you would still want a car at the weekend for skiing, big supermarket shop, however...you could use www.le-shop.ch and have your groceries delivered at home.

For socialising in Nyon, it takes a while to get to know people. I have been here a year now and have some friends finally based in Nyon as well as Geneva and surrounding areas...

www.genevaonline.ch is a great way to get to do people and join in with activities with other likeminded people....and for radio 88.4FM (WRG) and English radio channel good for traffic reports if you commute to Geneva from Nyon and also to hear about events going on...

Hope this helps

Re: Geneva or Nyon ?

oh yes, i forgot to mention about the taxes, there is a slight tax advantage being in Nyon (Vaud) but I am not sure it is a big enough difference to base your decision on whether to live in Geneva or Nyon. You should decide based on how you like your lifestyle to be...anyway, if your company is relocating you, you should have a tax consultant who could prepare a tax simulation for you...to give you a better idea
