SAD in Zug, where's the nearest cure?

What is the nearest (ie quickest by auto) spot to find the sun when it is like this (grau and bedeckt for days now) - otherwise suicide beckons methinks........

If the fog is not too high, the Hirzel can have its sunny spots. Maybe Mount Pilatus is an option? The SBB usually starts advertising "Entfliehen Sie dem Nebelmeer" trips around this time of year...

Other tips for SAD are going out at least an hour every day even if it's overcast, you still get the UV light, keeping to regular sleeping hours, exercising and making sure you get your vitamins.

And Saint Lucy's Day will be here quicker than you think, from then on you can just tell yourself it will get better every day.

Quickest is the Zugerberg or just up and around to Aegeri. If those are fogged in, try Hochstucki above Sattel. After that, on a day like today, the top of the Rigi is clear, sunny and spectacular. Use the webcams to check on the weather.

You're 10 minutes by train from Arth-Goldau and then it's another 40 minutes to get to the top of the Rigi on the cog-wheel train. The Rigi train stops at the Goldau A4 car park if you need to use the car.

The summit is at about 1800m and usually above the Hochnebel.

Blah, I also have winter depressions. What's worse, I'm in Holland since Monday, overcast every single day and there's no damn hills above the clouds, just a pure evenly gray mass wherever I look.

Is fog the thing surrounding the peaks?

So that means that if we go up to the peak we would actually find some sun? I thought we would had to go a bit higher... or maybe Monte Rigi is already tall enough

It's being overcast in Zurich since quite a while as well and the effect can be just depressing..

Yes and yes, when we have weather like this (3 months long during my first winter in Zurich).

The weather forecasts (e.g. NZZ) usually tell you the upper level of the Hochnebel. Tomorrow around this part of eastern Switzerland it will be 900m which means that the Uetliberg (800m) is no good but the Hörnli (1100m) should be OK and the Rigi (1800m), Pilatus (2100m) and similar well-connected peaks will give you a grandstand view of the fog soup.

As someone else pointed out, the SBB Railaway offers are also worth looking at.

Titlis was lovely and sunny yesterday once you got through the cloud, amazing clear views and blue skies and quite warm in the sun - certainly cheered me up for an hour or so seeing a buit of sunshine

We usually head to Andermatt. It's an hours drive from Zug, but so worth it for free parking and sunshine. Great place to go if you have a dog.

I prefer this webcam of Rigi Kulm from Swisswebcams.ch - think you get a better idea of the visibility than from the one over the snack bar.

Search for Aegeri and you'll find the Unteraegeri webcam.

Re: SAD in Zug, where's the nearest cure?

One indirect way of soaking up sunshine is to take fish oil as it contains vitamin D, especially in liver derived oils such as cod liver oil. I use it because I used to be very susceptible to SAD, and since I take a few teaspoons a week, I hardly notice a mood change when the days shorten and am much less affected by long days of fog, or an absence of sunshine.

See for example Vitamin D and its role in preventing and treating seasonal affective disorder (SAD) for more background.
