Re: Bicycle stolen - Basel - what to do?

Do you have the frame number, and was there any security marking on the bike?

Re: Bicycle stolen - Basel - what to do?

I have the invoice.

Don't think the frame number was on there.

No special markings from my side as well

Guess I was fooled by the sense of security here

Re: Bicycle stolen - Basel - what to do?

Report it to the police and your insurance company. Yes bicycles unfortunately are one of the most stolen items here especially if is new or reasonably valuable.

If you go the markets in eastern europe you should able to buy it back

Where did it get stolen from? Check if your household insurance covers the theft of cycles, if it does then call them after you visit the cops.

While we are on the topic, has anybody used https://www.velofinder.ch/ and successfully found a stolen bike?? I am quite skeptical about it because it involves relying on other people nosing around with their smartphones.

Re: Bicycle stolen - Basel - what to do?

Unfortunately I only have health insurance.

So I guess I can only report to the police.

I have been through this twice in Basel. At the police station, ask for the address for the "lost and Found" bicycles. I have been there, but can't remember the street neae - it is sort of between town and the stadium area. UNfortunately for me, the place closes early, before I finish work, so I have only got as far as the locked door of the building. :-(

Household and liability insurance is mandatory in Switzerland.

Foolish approach, this means you don't have any insurance on contents etc including if you damage something in the apartment then the owner can take you to the cleaners.

Get some its cheap and worth it in the end, if you choose not to then thats your loss.

If you damage something in the apartment you get it fixed or replace it... You don't need household contents insurance.

As opposed to NOBODY nosing around with their smartphones I certainly don't think you will be worse off if SOMEBODY would be doing the same.

And as others have pointed out. Liability insurance is even more important.

And if there's a fire/flood elsewhere in your building, it spreads to your apartment and your contents are destroyed you also get to replace it - out of your own pocket! Get some insurance.

Re: Bicycle stolen - Basel - what to do?

Facts:
  • I bought the bike in an auction on Ricardo
  • I think i got a very good deal CHF 150 (100 was bid and 50 was delivery charge)
  • I did not think that someone would steal MY bike so i did not see a need for insurance. I did not get one. I regret it now.
  • Bike went missing last night.
  • It seems common for bikes to get stolen. Very small chance of it coming back to me in one piece.
Do the cops here charge for a report? If so how much?
Can i still visit the Lost and Found if i dont report the missing bike to the cops?

P.S. I saw them selling a vignette on velofinder.ch which could be used to track your bike and also acts as insurance for stolen bikes. I wish i had known about it earlier.

If it doesn't show-up in the lost&found department: buy a new one.
Was it expensive?

Normally on the underside of the frame - the hub where the pedal shaft goes through.

Was it locked to something solid? - sometimes 2 locks should be used as thieves tend to take to take the easiest option, and may skip a bike double locked.

As of this year, velo vignettes are not required - and (as already recommended) alternative insurance should be obtained.

ah, ok then to something solid - if someone wants a bike they just pick it up and walk away with it.

it always ammuses me people have a huge chain but its not attached to anything
