Re: kindle, amazon uk?possible

I've got a feeling it will give you trouble. I know for music I can't download songs from the UK website with a Swiss IP and Swiss credit card. I need to use the german one, even if the songs aren't available on this.I don't know what criteria regarding IP adress and credit card they use to check where your from. If you've got a UK credit card try downloading a song or magazine on the UK website and see if it works.

I think it may be possible to do what you want, but you'd need to start by creating a UK amazon account, which needs a UK bank account and address. Pretty sure that if you have them and then link you kindle to this account it should allow what you want.

But otherwise, amazon had to implement a policiy a couple of years ago that wouldn't allow UK publications to be sold outside the UK, which includes non-UK kindle owners.

When you buy stuff for the kindle the purchase is completed entirely seperately from the download, which is via a 'push' not a 'pull' mechanism and so is not IP address sensitive. Indeed, it won't be using IP at all, as I undertand it, but a particular Amazon messaging protocol.

Re: kindle, amazon uk?possible

As far as I am aware, you can register your kindle on amazon.com, .fr or .de

I had to buy mine in amazon.com (God knows why, from Switzerland it's the only possibility?!?), so my kindle is automatically linked to the .com account.

BUT on the 'managing your kindle' option you can chose to move your registration to .de or .fr

I bought mine from the US, switched it as advised above (Manage Your Kindle) to UK, and usually pay with a Swiss credit card. Not having a UK bank account shouldn't present a problem.

Re: kindle, amazon uk?possible

The dollar is low at the moment, so .com is interesting. And they have a larger choice than .de

I've had a UK account for years and it has always been on a Swiss credit card and address....

I buy kindle stuff on .co.uk, com, de and even fr on one occasion and I've never had a problem...

I tried to set up a .co.uk account from here to down load e-books to Mama G's iPad and it wouldn't let me. I sent them a mail about it and the quite quick but unhelpful response was "sorry non residents can't use .co.uk and suggested .com" for English material..... They'd happily sell and send me a hard copy book though

Re: kindle, amazon uk?possible

I tried for the first time a couple of days ago. I have a UK account which I can still use for some purchases.

However I tried registering my Ipad using the kindle app and on the UK site it told me it could only register the kinle on the .com site. I thought ok no problem. Head over to the .com site. Try again. Nope it tells me I have to register on the .de site. grrh

Go to .de, my German not being great or pretty much existent I tried to register there. Bingo.

Fortunately for me the book I wanted was available in Englisch (that was an intentional typo !) Download ok. Ended up paying in Euros at least which is better than the CHF price if Amazon had a site in Switzerland.

Might try registering my ipad in the UK when I go back in the summer see if I can then make purchases from there and ee what happens when I get back. That is of course if the UK is not underwater by then.

These internet ip barriers really suck

Mama G got what she wanted in English from iBooks so we never bothered, and paid in CHF and the price for the 3 books were actually cheaper than kindle.co.uk when we worked it out £18 against CHF21.... (I KNOW).

We are going back to Blighty in Oct' so will try to set up an account from there with the iPad as the choice on co.uk is better. It does seem bloody stupid though, what's the difference between a real book and an e-book?

Re: kindle, amazon uk?possible

Being an oldie I can be very slow on the uptake and this thread has got me worried. I'm out of my depth with most of today's high-tech things anyway. But, and this is what worries me: I have asked for a Kindle for my birthday. I first saw it in England where my niece eagerly explained all about it. Now, if I have rightly understood from the above, I won't be able to buy here the whole range of books offered in England as I only have a Swiss debit card account - is that right?

Re: kindle, amazon uk?possible

I have not bothered to look, but I wonder if Amazon are charging different prices and offering different services across the EU/EA countries? If so, then perhaps it is time to start filing complaints with the EU commission....
