| | | Do you know anywhere I can throw away old shoes and clothes in Lausanne?
I found some threads about this problem in German-speaking part of Switzerland. I am in Lausanne, where can I do that in lausanne? I just need some public containers that allow me to throw my old clothes.
Thanks!

Sorry I can not be of much help | | | | | Yes, I know there must be somewhere I can throw these stuff, but I just don't know where. I don't want to go to the commune for this question only.
I guess there might be some websites that I can look for such information, who knows that?

You want to throw it away or you want to give it away?
If it's in good condition you can give it to the Salvation Army which is near Place du Tunnel, up the street. Not the one through the tunnel and not the one that leads to the Riponne.
Here is a list of second hand clothes stores in Lausanne. http://www.lausanne.ch/view.asp?DomID=64511 | | This user would like to thank miniMia for this useful post:

Also a few shoe shops (Ochsner, I think Vogele too) have started doing shoe recycling - so you stick your old shoes in the box and you get 1CHF off a new pair. Yes, OK, not really a monetary incentive, but it's still recycling.

How do the boxes look like? Do they look like those black plastic trash bins? I am actually living in Renens.

hmm. i'm not even sure they're all green! hahaha, but, i know that near us (sous gare) there is a box (similar to the ones in the u.s) where you can deposit clothes. there is one near the salvation army (rue de la borde) and others around the city. si jamais, take the 25 bus to beau regard with your bags, walk up beau regard and you'll see it. |

If you want to donate stuff, and you have a car, I feel sure Emmaus in Etagnieres would be happy to take it.
Just Google 'Emmaus Lausanne' and it will come up with directions and opening times etc.
It is in fact a wonderful source of bric-a-brac from huge wardrobes to bras.
I've donated and bought quite a bit of stuff through them......so far no bras though. |

I've been wondering the same thing as the poster... my hubby has heaps of shirts with holes in them so you can't really donate them. Do you just throw them in the trash or is there some form of recycling for them? I haven't see anything on the "Gemeinde" site. What have you guys done in the past? Thanks in advance...

When clothes are broken, we throw them away with the household waste - no point recycling those...

With a herd of mutts and the cleaning that entails, I always need rags.
In the US and in Asia, I was able to recycle (some) less than perfect clothing - so long as it was clean - to be used as pulp for the fiber and paper industries - but I've not seen anything like that here.

Meloncollie, you will be pleased to hear this is not strictly true in CH!
The clothes recycling bins around Lausanne (the green ones), state on them that the clothes (and shoes) you put into the bins go to Textura, Texaid, Terre des Homme (and a couple of others organisations I can't remember).
I used to think all the clothing I put in needed to be perfect, but I found this really interesting Texaid link: http://www.texaid.ch/Produkte/tabid/...S/Default.aspx "TEXAID collects more than 21,000 tonnes of used clothes in Switzerland. More than 65 % of this total is processed in the two sorting facilities in Schattdorf and Zurich. As a result of this professional sorting, 55 % can be worn again (clothing) or reused (household textiles). 15 % are cut up into dusters and 20 % are processed into shoddy wool for insulation materials. Roughly 10 % are soiled textiles or foreign objects that have to be incinerated with other refuse." (copy and pasted from the site)
So it is still worth putting your less than pristine clothing into the recycling
(Sorry this post doesn't help the OP!)

To the OP, this should help:
'Dans le conteneur spécifique prévu à cet effet. Rue du Simplon / Au village / Parking de la piscine / Av. de Saugiaz / Rue de Lausanne / Rue de la Savonnerie / Av. de Florissant / Rue du Lac / Sur-la-Croix / Rue du Simplon / Parking du Censuy / Avenue de Saugiaz / Renens-village / Parking de la piscine. Lors de ramassages caritatifs organisés. Déchèteries de Malley et Bussigny.'
This is copy and pasted taken from the official Renens site (look under their recycling section - it is very detailed and tells you exactly where to put just about everything!)

Textiles can and are recycled just like paper, plastic and glass. Recycled cloth gets turned into "stuffing", paper, new cloth, etc.
Opps, I see LemonDrizzle basically said that. But it's worth repeating! :P

Here's a map from the Lausanne ville website showing the location of the green boxes for old clothes and shoes. Just select "textiles" from the "types de dechets" box. http://www.lausanne.ch/UploadedAsp/3...5352&Version=4
