Yes, and then the OP would look like a freak walking around with a stick, in the middle of the city. | Quote: | | | | | To the OP:
Just up the ante. They jabber, you ululate. They bark, you bray. And if they stare at you insistently to psych you out, look down at their crotch, and then scrunch up your face in disapproval. They all, freaks or no, have the same soft spot. And if you're really freaked out carry a stick! It totally works and you'd be surprised how many you find just lying around!

| | | Re: Tips on how to deal with freaks? | Quote: | | | | | Ah yes, a pre-emptive strike. One tiny word to the wise: be sure you know what you're doing if you're going to escalate by using weapons, especially pre-emptively. Are you prepared for what may happen if the desired effect doesn't work? Let alone the legal hole you'd be in...
This freakin' climate of fear!
Attitude is your best defence, not firepower... | | | | |
For the sake of clarification - I certainly had no intention of implying that any potential weapon be used pre-emptively. I was merely advising the woman who asked the question originally to keep pepper spray in her handbag, like I (used to) do, for use if and when attacked. Keeping pepper spray in a handbag is a far cry from a pre-emptive strike. Sorry for those who chose to interpret my comments as such. I repeat: it was certainly not my intention.

| | | Re: Tips on how to deal with freaks? | Quote: | | | | | Several times, in fact. Indecent exposure in most cases. Of course the probability of being accosted/attacked/whatever will vary from city to city, country to country. I was attacked twice while hitchhiking in my teenage days in the U.S., and I certainly consider the U.S. more dangerous than CH. Also, I did not use the word "freak," which I agree is a rather vague term. In the context given, I simply assumed the woman was writing about personal discomfort and danger.
I think the point is, until something actually happens, danger is naturally only "perceived." But why wait until it becomes "real" to ward it off? I do not believe that "attitude" alone can change reality, and I do not see why anyone - male or female - should be made to feel responsible for feeling vulnerable on account of an attitude. | | | | | Hi Klarenca, maybe i should explain my use of the word attitude. I've also been on the receiving end of indecent exposure and although not pleasant my attitude was to look the other way and carry on walking. This saved me from any further confrontation and robbed the exhibitionist of the pleasure of my reaction. I did however report it to the police as I'm well aware that many women would feel threatened by this experience.
This hasn't robbed me of my security in Switzerland or convinced me that it's a particular dangerous place, however i certainly agree with you about common sense. There are places that i avoid when it's dark and late, like subways but I'd do that in any country. I've felt vulnerable on occasions but at the same time my attitude wont allow myself to think that evil a-waits around every corner.
I'm sorry that your experiences have had such an effect on you and that you feel the need to carry pepper spray but i personally wouldn't advocate it as a necessity to young women asking for advice on this forum. Then again thats just my attitude. |

Dave -Thanks for the direct reply.
To everyone else, I m certainly not advocating the unwarranted use of any weapon, or even the indiscriminate use of pepper spray - or whatever else one might use to fend off an actual attacker, including fingernails, knee-applied-to-the-crotch, fists, a nail file, or that trusty Swiss army knife.
I m intrigued to see that some of you find humor in the most unexpected places. Now that s what I call "attitude." | | | | | Looks like my explanation of attitude was a bit late klarenca |

I am a mother - and 48 years old, perhaps a bit older than yourself (I confess, I have not checked your profile). I think it is only to be expected that your experience in life will affect your perceptions. Once burnt twice shy, as they say. I wish it weren t so, but at the risk of being politically incorrect, testosterone is a rather formidable force. For better and for worse. I find it only reasonable to expect the better, and be prepared for the worse. How s that for attitude?

Are they 18 or older, because this is the legal requirement for the (less toxic) pepper sprays?

Greetings, Nathu.
A very valid point indeed. Yes, they re both of age and instructed in proper use of pepper spray. The older one is 21 and has been doing volunteer work with AIDS orphans in Cambodia for over a year and a half. She s seen quite a bit of the real world for her tender years.

For Basel, perhaps we could compile a "Weirdo Top-Trumps" pack, with cards such as "Smiley Woman in Summer Dress and Wellies in Winter", and that bloke who is a Freddie Kruger lookalike.
Cheers,
Nick
