Medical Schools in Switzerland

Hi guys,
I found out a while ago that my school in Switzerland only accepts natives for their med schools. Is this sort of case restricted to Switzerland being very nationalistic? Or does the restriction apply to generally all across Europe?

As a Canadian, I was hoping to do my medical training abroad, either in Switzerland, or a different European country, or perhaps even maybe Australia, the land down under. If you guys have any advice in this field, I'd appreciate.

The Canadian government would probably make me write some sort of test to validate my MD training in Switzerland to be deemed acceptable in Canada. What do you guys think of the MD training that they provide in Switzerland? Good? Bad? Mediocre?

Re: Medical Schools in Switzerland

it takes many thousands (CHF etc ) over the 5 years to train a doctor..............why would you expect CH, UK or any other EU country to fund that for you, for you then to go back to canada and put that expertise to use there and not into the country that has trained you.
During your training you have an elective which is designed for you to go to another country for 6 months and experience medicine in that country. so why not go to CH, UK or another EU country then ??

Re: Medical Schools in Switzerland

I remember from your numerous previous threads that you're going to live in Lausanne, meaning you'll either join EFPL or Unil. I know non-swiss people going to the Unil medical school so I'm not sure where you got your info from.

Re: Medical Schools in Switzerland

There are almost no positions in CH medical schools for foreigners (unless you happen to be married to a Swiss national, and an outstanding student), but that is certainly not the case everywhere in Europe. You might have better luck applying to medical schools in Germany or Ireland, although the latter is quite expensive.

If you are willing to consider E-EU, there are English-language training programs at several medical schools there, as well, but the quality of training on that half of the continent varies from quite good (Jagiellonian in Krakow, for example) to rather poor.

Note that Canada does not have a national acceptance criteria for foreign medical training. Rather, those licensing decisions are made at the provincial level. Indeed, some Canadian provinces are quite willing to accept Swiss residency training, which is generally well-respected internationally.

You might check with http://www.canamrecruiting.com/ as a resource for learning what international medical residencies are accepted in Canada, and what are not.

I hope that helps a bit... good luck to you.
