Help Exchanging Change for USD

Hello everyone,

I have 3 big bags of GBP, Euro, and CHF coins. Does anyone have a tip as to where I can exchange them for USD? My bank said they couldn't (wouldn't???) do it. In the US there are those coin things where you just dump it in and get paper cash.... My problem is there are 3 currencies and I need USD...

Any advice would be welcome!

Thanks!

CHF you can change via machine at UBS & some other banks via machine, but only into Chuffs.
Your stuck with the € & £ though .... wouldn't expect to be able to change Chuff coins for sterling in the UK, so why do you expect you can do it here ?

I doubt you can dump Euro coins and get paper in the US, be it USD paper or EUR paper...

The tip is - go over the border into France into a bank or post office, and change your EUR coins into EUR notes.

Repeat procedure going to the UK and get UK notes in exchange of the coins.

You know, all I asked was a simple question. I don't know why so many people on this englishforum are so rude. Maybe there are places in the US where you can excange this type of money... I was just ASKING....

Why don't you "veterans" do something better with your time.

Re: Help Exchanging Change for USD

Who was being rude?

You asked a question... it was answered with the correct information.

I have loose change from many countries and the only country that will honour change is the country that it is from.

There was an exception to this in 2002 when the Euro change over was going on. In this case banks accross Europe and in Switzerland (as far as I remember) took change from old currencies and gave Euros in return. This policy has now stopped and will likely not return until the next wave of countries joins the Euro.

So the advice you were given to nip across the border and change your Euro's for paper Euro and then go to a currency exchange is probably your best bet.

In many cases I have agreed with people who have asked certain questions, about how they were treated on the forum. In this case you asked a question and got two valid and as far as I am aware correct answers.

And all I said is I doubted such places exist - which doesn't really come in contradiction with your idea that they may exist...

Rest assured we're ready to retire, but not many have volunteered to replace us and contribute their experience so far.

I simply don't understand this reaction.

You received reasonable and sensible answers. Just because it may not be the answers you wanted to read does not make it rude.

If "veterans" did something better with their time, you would receive no answer at all.

In fact you don't appear to have contributed anything to these forums other than ask questions...

Alternatively, what with it being the season of giving, you could pop it all in a collection box at the airport. I imagine they take all currencies. Heathrow do.

Re: Help Exchanging Change for USD

Banks don't tend to accept coins for foreign exchange. The big reason is that coins are heavy and expensive to store and transport for their intrinsic value, compared to notes. Their margins would have to change if they started accepting foreign coins.

The banks also must centralise and repatriate the coins to the originating country so that they can get "real" money for it. eg let's say you've got a pocket full of Jordanian JOD coins from a trip. If you sell it to the bank, they then have to somehow securely transport them back to Jordan in order to onsell it and convert it back to CHF, and the price for doing this would have to be built into their exchange rate somehow. It is extremely unlikely that someone else here will come along wanting to buy the same pocket full of shrapnel. It's a very one-way function.

Arguably, with a major "nearby" currency such as EUR the rules could be slightly different.

Another option is, how about popping along to a big bank money exchange at eg Zurich airport? The branches there would be used to seeing lots of odd currencies, and as there's regular US flights they probably a) get asked the question frequently and b) could probably re-sell the coins?

Just my MTL 0.02.
