I would like to visit France again, and I'm wondering what cities in France are good for shopping and site-seeing. We live near Zurich, so I guess it would make most sense if it's somewhere not too far from Basel (within a one or two hour drive from Basel). I tried using the search function to see if anything was posted already but couldn't seem to find anything specific.

Any suggestions?

For shopping, I'm primarily interested in things for the home like decor, furniture, etc. (mostly contemporary) as well as shoes and clothing.

For site-seeing, I like interesting architecture, scenery and museums.

Go to Colmar for sightseeing and on the way you have Kingersheim shopping area with several furniture shops (Atlas, Fly, Crozatier etc).

As for clothes, I personally prefer Freiburg, Germany. It's just 50 km from Colmar, so you could do that too. Good for some sightseeing as well.

For sightseeing, you should visit some of the beautiful towns on the wine road, north of Colmar, eg Riquewihr, Eguisheim, Turckheim, Selestat. Also visit Koenigsburg castle, about one hour from Bale. Really worth seeing, and in the top ten touristic sites of France.

I'm a little puzzled - 'city' and 'good for shopping' aren't terms I'd normally associate together. All else apart the only cities within the sort of reach you're talking about are Mulhouse and... actually, there's just Mulhouse.

The town centre does have some pedestrian areas with a few department stores and the like, so may answer your needs, and it's certainly a pleasant enough place to be, but most shopping is out of town these days, with Ile Napolean prominent, and various areas like Guebwiller/Kingersheim having turned into super-sized strip malls, with huge shops lining most of the roads for miles around.

While not known as a shopping Mecca, I found Strasbourg center to be filled with very good clothes shops (medium to high end range is well represented).

Mulhouse is clearly more towards the lower end segment. In general, Mulhouse is not a nice town, quite the opposite I'm afraid.

Might be just at the edge of "not far from Basel" but I really like Besancon. Great food from the area, pretty town, reasonable shopping

Personally I think mulhouse is a cess pit hole of a place
