Fire Tax - Basel Stadt

A colleague of mine was mentioning something today about a fire tax he has to pay in Baselland in lieu of volunteer fire service.

How does this work in BS? Does it only apply to Swiss citizens? I've been here 5 years and have never received any info or bill for a fire tax. He says that perhaps I paid it in my 'quellensteuer', but now with a C permit I may get billed with my tax declaration.

I can't find any info on the bs.ch website or other posts here. Thanks in advance!

Re: Fire Tax - Basel Stadt

http://www.steuer.bs.ch/feuerwehrersatzabgabe.htm

here's and excerpt of the very thing, albeit only in german from Basel Stadt tax office, hope it helps anyway
As pyou can see it's max 280 francs PER ANNUM!

Steuerpflichtige Personen

Its not just in Basel it is more or less everywhere, although the level of payments due if you don't do your fire duty varies - in Aargau it is CHF 300 for example. Note also this applies to everyone not just Swiss, but not if you pay "quellensteuer" as there is no way to correct this...

IIRC Baselstadt had some recent discussion about allowing foreigners into the fire brigade.

In small villages, they have a volunteer service - some colleagues of mine are members of their local one. They told me the main source of callouts at this time of year is the lights on the village Christmas tree going out.

Cheers,

Nick

I don't think you do remember correctly. I had a colleague who joined as soon as he moved to Switzerland (and Basel) aged 28 and strutted his stuff for the fire brigade for nearly 25 years and he was foreign arriving in 1970...

It now surely varies, depending on one's income. Fr 300.-- seems quite a lot. Someone who is non-exempt with little or no taxable income pays only Fr 30.-- per annum at present. (I have just seen it on their tax decision for 2013.)

Also a person who is on a B-permit or who is quellengesteuert can now get it corrected (lowered!) by filling in a tax return, so that is useful as it could save Fr 270.-- per annum in Aargau for example!

How could they not allow them in? It isn't officially a tax, it's an exemption fee, so if a foreigner volunteers they would probably have to take them.

Of course, if they don't want to call them that's a different point and I wouldn't blame them if the language is a problem.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone with (at most) try-your-best chat level German has tried?

Perhaps they thought foreign firemen would be on a slippery pole.

Canton of Zurich the Fire Brigade is paid by the Cantons Fire Insurance. Same goes for Geneva and Ticino. http://www.benzlaw.ch/dokumente/publ...tter_05_07.pdf
