Re: Canadians - Procedure for Leaving Canada?

I just had a few very helpful and friendly conversations with the CRA.

First off, WOW! I've only been back in Switzerland for 15 months and yet I was floored by how friendly and helpful they were.

Back to the subject - I was informed that one does not need to file any forms since one will never receive an official confirmation that the CRA classifies you as a non-resident.

If you make sure that
you actually leave Canada to live in another country; and
you sever your residential ties with Canada. (Bringing your pet with you is apparently good proof of this)

And do not own property (including stocks and other relating finances - although you are allowed to keep a bank account, your RRSPs and TFSA) in Canada. And you don't leave your spouse and dependents behind,

all you have to do is note your departure date on the filing of the year you leave.

Obviously, for some people, things may be a little more complicated.

Do you have pets? Which ones? If you want to bring them to CH make sure to follow the relevant regulations.

There is an advantage to declaring yourself as a non resident if you have a large sum of money in an RRSP and wish to withdraw it. This money is treated as income as soon as you withdraw it but as a non resident this sum of money will be taxed at a fixed rate.

Re: Canadians - Procedure for Leaving Canada?

You change your address with the bank to your current one (for example here in CH - which indicates that you are a non- resident) and the bank is required to subtract the appropriate tax percentage amount when you withdraw from your RRSPs (as Marcia at the CRA told me today). You don't need to fill out the (very specific and requiring info that I don't believe the CRA needs to know about me) Form to be seen as a non-resident.

Re: Canadians - Procedure for Leaving Canada?

Not even once every 5 year? We got a (elective?!) form to register as non-residents.
