Ordering printing ink cartridges online

I`m guessing most of you order your printer ink cartridges online?

I need help.
Being a gentle little old lady, who`s basic knowledge of computerized things and modern gadgets is, well, at best, primitive, I find myself in the position of having to order ink for my two printers - and was told by my, too busy to do it for me, kids, that it`s simple.........

I type in the printer name and what I want, click what I want, fill in the forms, and hey presto they`ll be delivered to my door. Good!

But .... I spent the morning searching for my printers online. Found them, and then clicked the pictures of the cartridges and they LOOK DIFFERENT to the cartridges lying next to me! Bigger somehow, without the extra knobs and other plastic things on mine.

I`ve got a Brother MFC 9750 DR6000 TN6300.
And an Epson Stylus 130.

And then ... to make matters worse, everything online is in German.
Yes, I can speak German, but don`t understand all the terminology listed in there!

Now, I`m afraid to just order this stuff, because it`s about Sfr90 plus, and don`t want to get involved in returning if it`s not right!

Another problem: I only need the black ink.

But when Googling about all this, I find info saying the printers need ALL the ink colours, that it is not just black that is used to print black....(?)
I don`t do anything fancy with my printers, merely print out basic stuff.

The Epson has full cartridges of the colours.
I have no idea what the Brother has, except it says it has "no ink".

Any advice any of you have for me? I need this ink rather urgently.

Thank you, in anticipation of a load of assistance

Re: Ordering printing ink cartridges online

Apologies for pointing out what to me is obvious, but why don't you take the old cartridges to a print shop if it is urgent?

They will probably stock the exact same ones, or a cheaper replacement, and might even be able to re-load them with ink for you.

If they printers have a seperate black ink supply then you should be able to get simply a replacement for it, however if they just have three colours then yes, they will mix all together to make black.

Thank you for your most practical advice! What is obvious to you, is to me, like roaming around in a forest and feeling lost!

Now ... to find a print shop.

Re: Ordering printing ink cartridges online

Most Interdiscount shops stock all the printer cartridges. After considering the cost of postage for online ordering, they are not much more expensive. Take the original with you (And the details of your printer model) as nobody will refund you for a wrongly ordered cartridge! Keep the original for your next order.

Some manufacturers have 2 sizes of ink cartridges, normal and larger (!) so you might well be unconvinced by the pictures.

Technically, you would think a printer would not mind if the colour was empty? But to ensure you keep buying cartridges, every time you switch on the printer it tests all the cartridges by dropping a tiny bit of ink, and if any of the cartridges is empty it stops the power on sequence (Which you have discovered).

On laser printers the manufacturers fiddle the toner level detector, and the cartridge shows empty when it might still have 20% left!

Re: Ordering printing ink cartridges online

I agree with the others. It is best to get in-store, with your empty cartridge and model info in hand. For your Brother printer, it may only be out of one color of ink rather than all. Ours has 4 different cartridges, but if even one of them is empty the printer will not print no matter what you do. The Epson may have a similar setup.

The added bonus of taking your cartridges with you is that the store will usually recycle them for you.

Edit to add on to what Sbrinz said: Our cartridges have little windows that fit with the sensor on the printer to indicate whether they are empty. Often when the printer says empty, you can still see ink in the window. Our trick is to pop the cartridge apart and put a small piece of black electrical tape over the window. We can then print easily for another 2-4 weeks (normal printing). HTH

Salaam Sbrinz and 3wishes!

Thank you for taking the time to educate me

I`ll head off this Saturday morning into the metropolis of the next town and find me a print shop.

(Hahaa .... ..... now I`m trying my hand at internet banking! And linking up to a Paypal account! Well, I guess that new things keep the brain active?
But I put my foot down about an iPhone - there`s a limit to my brain capacity)

FWIW, here's a plug for IJT Direct. They have the cheapest printer refills I've found, and they'll deliver to Switzerland. Takes a few days in the post, so might not meet your 'urgent' requirement, but if you need to order a second set of spares, you might consider them.

Re: Ordering printing ink cartridges online

I buy my replacement cartridges online through eBay. Ricardo also seem to have them. They are miles cheaper than any print shops that I have visited.

If you enter the make and model number of your printer it should show the correct ones. On some sites it is not unusual for the supplier to use one standard photo, to cover many versions. Make sure that you confirm the make and model with your order.

It should be possible to buy just black cartridges. Sometimes the suppliers sell full sets of the colours with extra black ones as they tend to get used more

IJF quoted me GBP16.98 to deliver 4 epson ink cartridges to Switzerland. the cartridges are tiny and light - I would expect postage to the in the GBP2-5 range for such a package from UK.

I found ordering official cartridges from Epson CH to be cheaper than buying refills from IJF, whose postage charges I would consider to be a rip off.

Re: Ordering printing ink cartridges online

Their postage has really gone up recently. I've found that I can usually get what I'm looking for at the same price on amazon.de -- there is a lot of competition in the market, which keeps prices low.

3PPP3 have good value refurbished toner/cartridges from Peach and they offer free shipping in Switzerland.

On top of that there's a CHF 15 discount until 30 Jan when you use this code: 525067BF

Re: Ordering printing ink cartridges online

Has anyone ever used www.tintenwelt.ch or http://w3internet.ch/webshop/

The address listed is:
W3 Internet Services GmbH , Alte Landstrasse 92 , 8700 Küsnacht , Suisse

More expensive than the other EU countries, but no delivery charged and based in Switzerland which has its own benefits.

Re: Ordering printing ink cartridges online

Sorry to revive this old thread.

I will need your help regarding a re-manufactured ink cartridge (HP 23) I purchased online from here: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B000X2XSAE (UK-based merchant).

After installing the cartridge, I found out that it doesn't print at all. So has the ink inside the cartridge dried out / hardened? Because when I swing it, there is no sign there is any liquid inside! Still the re-manufactured cartridge is 24 grams heavier than my original cartridge.

I have cleaned up the print head, but it still doesn't print at all.
There is no manufactured/expiry date on the cartridge or its packaging.

What should I do?

All suggestions are welcome!

Thank you

Contact the seller?

We buy non genuine cartridges all the same. Mostly they work fine but occasionally they simply won't work at all. As our printer takes 4 of them, losing the odd one now and then is no big deal.

This type of company simply refills second hand cartridges, and sometimes the cartridge is electrically defective. I had similar experience to you, I sent it back, and it was promptly replaced, without question.
