| | | Swiss history books
Does anyone know about good Swiss history books?
I'm searching some general history books, not an era in special.
Thank you in advance!

If someone does not want to buy a book - I'd say, give this site a
try,it's available in english,spanish,italian,french and german.It
is really very informative and has a lot of photographs to make
this 'dry' topic entertaining! http://history-switzerland.geschichte-schweiz.ch/
Präsenz Schweiz is a well known institution, this site was created
together with the Swiss info and various other sources, very
informative but in my humble opinion the other one is better http://www.swissworld.org/eng/swissw...l?siteSect=800 |

Thank you EastEnders, I already knew that link. I also read Wikipedia.
But I love to read on my bed. I've already a little book of the serie "Que sais-je?" called Histoire de la Suisse.
And I pretend other book at least more informative. That one of Oxford Press isn't in Amazon.com |

| | | Can you recommend a book on the history of Switzerland?
I would like to read up on the history of Switzerland (beyond Wikipedia).
I'm not talking about books like Beyond Chocolate or Xenphobe's Guide, I mean books on the bona fide history of Switzerland.
Have any of you read any such books you could recommend?

Magnus Magnusson : Scotland: The Story of a Nation is a good starting point for general history & you can then do further reading with the likes of John Prebble TM Devine William Ferguson Duncan Bruce
any particular areas of interest ? Covenanters , Stuarts, Industrial, Science ?

And in the beginning God created the universe, but it was void and without form. The spirit of God flew over the face of the waters.
Then God created Scotland.

well here's an easy to understand BASIC Swiss History online and it come sin english as well when reading through it, I felt as if I was at school again http://history-switzerland.geschichte-schweiz.ch/
Switzerland has also a rich history of sagas and tales, http://www.buchhaus.ch/csp/shop/lus/...csp?ID=4266400
and back to your original enquiry , i can recommend this one http://www.buchhaus.ch/csp/shop/lus/...csp?ID=1892376
my father hs got it and it served my eldest daughter many a good service when she had to research something for school as it covers almost anything in regards to Switzerland and is easily understandable.

apart from giving the online 'book' a try ( i think i posted the english link)
then this would be a good option http://www.questia.com/PM.qst?a=o&d=11307043 although it's an old book and does not cover the WWII and onwards!
here is the full list of books in relation to my search 'History' and 'Switzerland',maybe there is the one or other that tickles your fancy. http://www.questia.com/library/histo...ss-history.jsp
and it seems the book of DIETER FAHRNI , Outline History of Switzerland ( ISBN 3-908102-61-8 ) is only available here at the moment, neither Amazon nor www.book.ch stock it...... http://www.buchhaus.ch/csp/shop/lus/...=9783908102618

I am in the middle of reading this at the moment. So far I have found it quite readable but perhaps a little "light". If you are looking for a brief synopsis of the life and times of Switzerland then I would recommend this (the complete history in 129 pages) but if you a looking for something that goes into a bit more detail then I think you would be a bit frustrated.

Morgarten, Zwingly. Ok, there you have it. Not much more to Swiss history I would say ;-) | Quote: | | | | | I would like to read up on the history of Switzerland (beyond Wikipedia).

So... to learn more about Switzerland I decided to read biographies of as many nations leaders during world war II as possible. I am through a couple and am in the middle of the one on General Guisan (Swiss). Its not exactly easy/ captivating reading but it is another way to get a daily dose.

I've recently read an article about the new interest in Swiss history in the French speaking part of the country that also led to the creation of two new compact books, similar to this one in German (that I didn't read. Volker Reinhardt: Geschichte der Schweiz). Perhaps one of these will be translated?
Speaking of General Guisan and his antagonist, then president Pilet-Golaz, I've stumbled upon this article about the air force and relationships with Germany in WWII. Might be worth a machine translation. For the aviation buffs, the printed version of this article is in the latest issue of the Wochenzeitung (17.1.08) and has photographs of the Me-109 and D-3800, too | | This user would like to thank Nathu for this useful post: | |
