Well, the thing is, if a lecturer makes you read a book which she doesn't really discuss in her lectures and instead prefers to ramble on about other things or, if we do talk about the book, basically just reads it to us, then you can assume that the book is the basis of knowledge. However, you need to know that the lecturer is a big believer in psychoanalysis and sees it as the solution for everything, even if it is not the best method for certain things.

So if our book states "eating disorders benefit from cognitive behavioural therapy" and we are asked what is to be used for treating EDs in the exam, you still have to say "psychoanalysis" because of the lecturer's personal preference.

Hardly scientific but that is the way it is.

Anyway, the first few years at uni here are about learning everything off by heart and regurgitating it. No thinking involved, except the bit where you think what the hell the lecturer was thinking when he prepared the exam.

Re: Psychology studies in Switzerland

Be aware that only state (german: "öffentlich-rechtlich"/public)universities/ universities of applied sciences - like University of Zürich and Fachhochschule Zürich in this case- offer degrees/titles that are recognised and protected!!

Titles/degrees from PRIVATE institutes or schools don't have any kind of official recognition or accreditation...

Good luck!

I don't want her to study something for 3-5 years only to find that there is no demand or jobs for Psychology.
concerning where to study i really have no idea, but as i studied psychology for 1 year in the states and was interested in perhaps pursuing it further here in switzerland ive talked many times with my uncle (a psychiatrist in zurich) and basically what ive learned from him is that right now the demand for psychologist jobs is similar to that in the us-"too many" people are studying it and therefore as a result theres less of a demand..of course if thats your sisters dream and she really loves it thats no reason for her to not pursue it..but from talking to someone on the inside i would say that at least concerning job demands shed be better off going the medical route with psychiatry or then maybe combining psychology with another degree to leave more options open..

also real quick, her being fluent in so many languages will be a HUGE help here, she could study basically anywhere she wants to..

hope i could be of some help!

Re: Psychology studies in Switzerland

I wonder if you guys could give me some advice on psychology BA or Masters in zurich on nearby

i already have a ba and msc in finance. I have now finally decided to pursue what i really wanted to do, and i have started an into course psychology with a view of doing a conversion course next year.

As luck would have it, i found out that my husband is getting relocated to zurich in the summer, and i am being cut-off from the universities in the UK. Problem is I don't speak anything but English (and even that is a bit shaky ) and have no idea if i should be looking to do a ba, or may be a masters, or is there a conversion course like in the UK? And most info in in German. I have nothing again learning it eventually if i have to, but is there anything i can be doing toward a degree while i am learning the language?

Appreciate any suggestions

Re: Psychology studies in Switzerland

How about distance learning? For instance, the Open University in the UK?

Re: Psychology studies in Switzerland

Hi All,

I have a question - Can I study to be a psychotherapist in CH by taking a postgrad diploma course, then a masters?

I have a BSc in Biology, a MSc in Computer Science but I'd like to become a Psychotherapist (in the UK I can do a postgrad diploma then a Masters ie. not first a Batchelors..). I'm not sure if that's possible here..

It'd be great if you could help - I can't find much in the internet about it..

Thanks,

Magnus

Re: Psychology studies in Switzerland

Hi all

I also want to study psychotherapy in Switzerland and can confirm you need a masters to get on most courses and for sure if you plan to practice in CH. I have driven myself fairly wild trying to clarify this so I am certain now that you need it. The Swiss system is fact the other way around from the UK system, as you have identified. In CH you need the masters before you can go on to do the diploma!

I don't know whether you would be able to get onto a masters of psychology without the bachelors, but it may be possible having done biology. You will have to check the specific courses and institutions.

I also have a question. It appears that you can study a million things at masters level in CH in English, but not psychology. Does anybody know of any psychology master courses in English, or any other way of studying a masters in English without leaving Switzerland? I have looked at the OU in the UK (they are about to start their last masters in psychology course in May), and am contemplating trying to get my language skills up to a sufficient level to study in German/ French but it would be faster and infinitely more comfortable doing it in English!

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Slice, As far as doing it in the UK there is also a distance learning course in the University of East London. I heard good things about it.

Do you happen to know of any diploma that could be done in English in Switserland, once you have done your masters? I am just finishing mine...

Re: Psychology studies in Switzerland

Hey,
I am currently doing my Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of Zurich. Unfortunately it is not in english though, but most of the literature read is in english and most of the Prof.s allow you to write the papers in english.
I graduated from NYU with a 4.0 GPA, and i STILL have to take Bachelor classes, that really annoys me:-(
I tried to explain, that NYU would not give you a diploma with "insufficient" classes in psychology. Oh well, ....I decided to accept what I apparently can not change. Nevertheless I am pretty happy with my decision to study here in Zurich. The program looks good, and they offer some really interesting classes.
