Anything I'm forgetting to budget?

So far I've been able to gather I need to budget the following things.

  • Health Insurance with Accident Protection
  • Personal Belongings and Liability Insurance
  • Legal Insurance
  • Mobile Phone Bill
  • Utilities
  • Rent
  • Groceries
  • Transit
  • Taxes
Is there anything I might be forgetting? I don't expect to be driving, so I'm not concerned about car insurance, Pillar 3 looks like it'll depend on how much money I have left over, and I won't have any investments.

Bilag covers TV/Radio or will I have to pay more for different options?

Re: Anything I'm forgetting to budget?

Bilag is just a licence to receive tv, radio and internet signals. You'll need to factor in the actual cost of line rental, subscription for internet, etc. There's quite a choice so you'll need to shop around once you're here.

More Chäs Weie for me, haven't been able to eat that for 7 years - Fladde Tag is totally going to be my favourite day of the week for at least 3 months after I get off the plane - while some damn good chocolate can be found in Vancouver.

dental care is not covered with health insurance. I would suggest to budget for a biannual cleaning and checkups as well.

You could also look at an online budget planner, for example, under . . .

Would that be handled by supplemental insurance, or is there somewhere else I'd have to look for that?

Re: Anything I'm forgetting to budget?

Do you plan on getting a pet? Vet bills, SKN courses if having a dog.

Billag is around CHF465 for the year payable in one hit. Then TV, digital box, cable and/or satellite on top of that.

What are you bringing with you? May need furniture, bedding, kitchen stuff?

Re: Anything I'm forgetting to budget?

Accident protection is covered by your employer, if you have one. Otherwise it is part of your health insurance. Consider whether you want to apply for supplemental from the get-go. It is an additional expense but nice to have. Budget for your rental deposit too, if you plan to rent. It can be up to the equivalent of 3 months' rent.

Re: Anything I'm forgetting to budget?

We make a separate budget for eating out, because it's a big expense.

I'd also put a small budget in there for the 'gap' when you need to see the doctor or buy medication and dental.

And we also have a 'holiday' a 'gifts' a 'debt repayment' category. Clothing and shoes, recreation/sport/day trips, extras for when you have guests (it always costs us a bit extra when we have friends or family staying), and definitely a rainy-day-fund for anything else you've forgotten.

I won't be having a pet any time soon. I'd wait on that until I'm settled in and have decided on a town I'll be staying in indefinitely.

Is there any place that does a breakdown of what repairs and excess nebenkosten could end up being? I've seen some threads on the latter but they seem to touch on extreme cases rather than regular costs.

Those deposits really could add up. Presumably I wouldn't have to pay deposit on a mobile line, just the SIM card?

Re: Anything I'm forgetting to budget?

For the excess NK for a single person, with a small apartment, I'd allow 50chf per month. It's usually extra heating charges that comes up as a problem, if they under-estimate or if it's a particularly cold winter.

Re: Anything I'm forgetting to budget?

If you still have family in Canada, don't forget the cost of the required pilgrimage back home.

(We used to get away with only 4 times a year, but now it's every two weeks. Takes rather a large bite out of our discretionary spending...)

But even if you don't need to head back home regularily, think about holiday travel. Travel is part of the Swiss psyche - and a large part of many Swiss household budgets.
