Re: Looking for a Dentist in Zürich

For convenience in Zurich, try the Zurich Zahnartz Zentrum (Zurich Dentist Centre) which is in Shopville and Bahnhofstr.

www.zzz-hb.ch

One point of warning however: The dentists are self employed under the umberlla of ZZZ. I had a filling replaced recently but a few days later a piece of it broke off. I called because I wanted to see my dentist urgently. They told me I'd have to wait a few days beacuse he wasn't available, so I asked for another dentist. "Sure, but you'll have to pay again because they're self employed". I was angry, as I'm a customer of ZZZ, not a customer of a specific dentist.

OK, maybe this has turned into a negative recommendation. Hope it helped in some way.

You will need a bank loan. Take clove oil for the toothache and paracetamol for the financial headache. If you have the time , go Czech/Poland/Germany or UK.

I remember once posting a comparative histogram link of dental prices in Europe and Switz, it was probably on exprats.

Is it really worthwhile going to another country... I have alot of work to be done, fillings, poss root canal, and I need a cap etc. I dont mind going elsewhere but how is one to find a good dentist in Czech/Germany/UK etc?

Re: Looking for a Dentist in Zürich

My dentist is Dr. Steiner in Wohlen and he's very good, no fuss, doesn't do stuff you don't need and from what I can judge, reasonably priced. If I remember correctly, having a wisdom tooth removed came in at under 300 Francs.

The magic "code" that tells you what price range you are going for are the Taxpunktwerte (TPW). Every treatment has a regulated basic price, which is then multiplied by the TPW.

For a comparision of dentist TPW, go here.

Re: Looking for a Dentist in Zürich

I have some more rates, I am hoping one of you knows if these are normal, cheap or expensive for CH.
  • Root canal job on 1 tooth, 3 canals: 1000 CHF
  • Titanium Implant: material cost + labour of dentist and technician: 3500 CHF
  • Crown and guided bone repair: more than 3.5 k
If anyone has had a titanium implant, do you remember how much the bill was (if so, sorry for reminding you!)

I understood that people who have low TPWs can still charge more because they can change another variable (time perhaps, or codes, I am not sure).

Re: Looking for a Dentist in Zürich

I just had a dental checkup plus cleaning...my bill was Sfr185. I did a root canal about 3 years ago and that was Sfr3500. (would have travelled to Hungary or nearby if I had known)...in case anyone needs a comparison...

My dentist is near the Ottikerstrasse in Zurich...Praxis Nägeli.

Good Dentist at Bahnhof Stadelhofen (Zurich)

My brother in law runs a dental tech lab in Lugano and does some teaching at the Uni in Zurich. The link above was his recommendation to me for the best dentist in Zurich.

He knows his stuff and speaks excellent English

I thought TerryMac was still at Newcastle with Souness?
I broke a filling the other day, so I searched this forum for Dentists in Zurich. There appear to be thousands of them, actually when you start looking, you can't see the wood for the trees, kind of thing. There is no shortage of dentists in Zurich.

I've just been to see the good Dr Mettler.

The hygenist was great, all in all a funky experience, really. A nice Italian who nearly chewed my ears off. I wanted to talk back, but it was all a bit muffled. The hygenist was very thorough, very. The best hygenist experience I've ever had. I got poked and scraped, prodded, flossed, sanded, sonic-ed, lasered, you name it, I got it.

I had xrays taken.

The results were that I need two fillings and an inlay, which is a big-ass filling, more of a tooth-reconstruction job.

A filling costs 300 CHF, an inlay 1300 CHF. I'm not sure how much the consultancy and hygenist cost. I passed on the 300 CHF toothbrush though.

One more thing... He can only see me in May. I've got the Grand Canyon in my mouth, but he'll see me in May. I'm thinking a busy dentist is a popular dentist is a good dentist.

He is a very nice guy, seems to be honest as well. I think I'm going to stick with him, get this job done adn then see how I feel. I'll let you all know what the actual work is like.

Kitten, or is a Kitty provided us all with a link that is a list of dentist and where on the greed-o-meter they stand. It's an index that the dentists are rated against for srandard work done. Check it out. I get the impression that going to the dentist just IS very expensive here.

Re: Looking for a Dentist in Zürich

hmmm, I've got one of those YMMV stories...

I got a porcelain crown replaced in Zurich in 2004. (I've had a few...) It cost less to do in Zurich than when I got it originally, in Auckland New Zealand. It was about CHF 700 all up.

Admittedly it was novelty value to the dentist, and during the sessions she was explaining to her dental assistants (shwing!) about cosmetic dentistry and how it differs from general reconstructive dentistry.

I can't remember her name, sorry. Und leider nur Deutsch sprache.

I've had 2 appointments with Mettler in 1 week. He is a genius and a great dentist to boot. I had a broken tooth and needed a filling in another. Turns out I might need a crown.

His methods are great and he is very friendly and considerate. His helpers are very good as well, he takes his time and is thorough. He speaks English very well.

I've not been billed yet, but a filling costs 300 CHF, an inlay 1300 CHF. Check the post a few up by Kittster on 29.01.2007 11:10 - there is a link to a site that puts dentists on the price scale.

Re: Looking for a Dentist in Zürich

There's a regular advertisement in 20mins (ZH) for a company that arranges trips to Hungary for dental care. They do an initial inspection and diagnosis in Switzerland then it's off to Hungary.

No idea how much you save, or whether the savings go to hotel and transport so you have a holiday in Hungary plus dental care for the same price of the dental care alone in Zurich?

Re: Looking for a Dentist in Zürich

The thing is, if I'm getting a crown or an inlay and it goes pear-shaped, I want to be able to go back to the dentist and get it fixed. There is some kind of peace-of-mind guarantee with a local dentist.

Re: Looking for a Dentist in Zürich

Ok...

I have read through the thread and seen prices for root canal etc up to 3500CHF

Can any one tell me how much I can expect to pay for a filling? I haven't been to a Swiss dentist before and just noticed a nice hole in one of my teeth. Need to get it done sooner rather then later before it becomes problematic!!!

Any help much appreciated!

Oh yea... I'm looking in the Zurich or Uster region.

Re: Looking for a Dentist in Zürich

Hi

I went to the dentist a couple of weeks ago

The hygenist appointment cost me 220 francs that included X-Rays, and fillings are 300 francs - Unfortunately I need 4!! a hefty bill for me

I was told it would be cheaper to go over the border to Germany - I phoned a dentist in Konstanz and they quoted me 220 francs for a filling so not much of a saving by the time I have paid for two return train fares

I went to

Dr. med. dent. Markus Mettler
Goethestrasse 20
8001 Zurich
Tel: (01) 254 99 99
Fax: (01) 254 99 98
Email: info@mettler-dent.ch

Hope this helps
Nicky
