Go-Pro......wait!!!!!!

I stopped myself from buying two GoproHero3's this morning.

I did a bit of research and it seems Hero4 is on the horizon.

Also recently the company is making the move to go public.

No release date as of yet. Really annoying as I wanted to film some stuff before the snow goes.

Anyone know of a place (high enough) to film in the snow all year round that is reasonably close to Zug??

cheers
SC

Engelberg Titls is probably the closest 3000m mountain. It definitely has snow all year round...

Buy extra batteries. If I look at how the Hero3 lasts on batteries, the Hero4 will be a hungry little bunny...

I think I read somewhere that they didn't open last year or a few years ago for skiing in summer, maybe wrong as I read mixed answers, any one know if this is correct?

Re: Go-Pro......wait!!!!!!

My 2 pence.

It can be hard work to film if your not amazing at skiing, your already carrying a lot of stuff and wearing gloves etc.

For example I went snorkeling in Egypt in January with just the camera on a go pole floating handle, the footage I got was amazing.

I then went skiing also in Jan in Borovets we had 2 cameras in the group and the footage was not great. We had all sorts of equipment, poles, helmets, chest mounts etc but when you fall over you knock the camera out of position, you need to check the lens for snow and battery life in cold condition is not good! Being slightly better at skiing I am sure the footage would have been better.

(If you get snow on the lens, lick the lens to clean it... this really works and GoPro recommend it in the manual!)

Tips:
1) Play with the camera / get mounting ideas before you go.
2) Use smart phone and Wifi to get a good shot lined up before you start.
3) If you fall over, recheck everything before setting off again.
4) You will need the Anti-Fog Inserts (http://gopro.com/camera-accessories/...ti-fog-inserts)
5) I bought a phone charger cell, I could recharge the GoPro over lunchtime and get another 2 hours filming after lunch.

Portable charger:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...table+charger+

MAH means Milliamp Hours, the higher the more charges you will get I have a 2600MaH cell and I get a bout 1 full charge from that, if you grab a 10,000MAH cell that would probally last for 3-4 charges.

It needs to be 5v 1A charger.

Other than that the GoPro cameras are simply amazing, I really enjoyed using it and look forward to getting some better footage skiing in the future! But it's a lot of trail and error. Film hours and hours and create several minutes of footage when editing.

Re: Go-Pro......wait!!!!!!

Also it's worth mentioning that the GoPro cameras are pretty feature-complete if your requirements are 1080p filming. Heck, even 4k filming (I have a Hero3 Black).

For the Silver model, you'll get full HD, wireless remote (IIRC) and better battery life than the Black.

The mounts are good too, I have a GoPro mount for the car (it sticks well), a Flymount for the motorbike plus a head mount (which gave an excellent account in a shooting range - very much FPS-style ).

In short, why wait? You will not be disappointed....

On the plus side, a massive fall, face-plant, ski and pole retrieval followed by much effing and jeffing, all caught on camera, is one of the highlights of the GoPro...

But when you start messing about with frame rates you no longer can use 4k with the hero3

That's why the hero4 will be a giant leap forward.

Its worth the wait considering all in (accessories etc...) I will be spending almost CHF 1500.

cheers

It depends on the release date I guess, I bought my Hero 3+ in Jan for £359, my friend bought the Hero3 same time for £269.

Add a 64gb class 10 memory card for £80 plus a few accessories your looking at £500.

I expect the Hero4 to be more expensive than the Hero3+ and then the Hero3+ will be £90-100 cheaper...

Re: Go-Pro......wait!!!!!!

If he's filming in snow and sunlight, he'll be getting some filters as well as mounts.

I can't believe you need 4k with variable framerates for poncing about on snow

You can only use 4K when mounted on a tripod, it's only 12 or 15fps on 4k mode.

Your best bet is 1080p or 1080p Wide at 60 fps.

CHF 549 currently for the hero3

I need two.......so that's already CHF 1098 without accessories.

Plus at some point I will need a drone......all in I reckon about CHF 2000.

They used to do summer skiing up until about 2006, but at that point they stopped, to help preserve the glacier for better skiing from October to May. So June-August you can't ski there (although in fact you can if you want - no-one will stop you but it's not 'open').

What does continue to run all summer is the cable car(s) to the top station at 3020m and the "Ice Flyer" chairlift down to the glacier area, together with a moving carpet lift alongside a short straight sledge run and a banked rubber-ring track. Last time I went up there in the summer there were also a few snowboarders, with some jumps and stuff, but I don't know is that continues.

So yes, there's plenty of snowy scenery and some activities available whatever the season.

What happens to the chocolate afterwards? Do you need volunteers to help "clean up"?
