| | | Buying books online?!
Hi everybody,
Does anyone know of a Swiss (or nearby) website like Amazon or Barnes & Noble where I can buy books in English or French without paying the extra $40 US for shipping from the States?
Thanks!

Miranda | | | | | There's Amazon.de for one, books.ch for another.
HOWEVER, as the CHF is on par with the US dollar, you may find that it's worth paying the shipping/taxes/tipping the postman rather than paying the markup on the books that you would pay here in Europe.

I use www.bookdepository.co.uk
The books are often discounted and it is free shipping to Switzerland. They don't always have everything in stock but I've found them to be really good.

That's a great idea, thank you!
I'm looking for eh, everything, anything. Maybe fiction, cookbooks, books about Switzerland, maybe an Italian language textbook.
Thanks again.

I usually get the ISBN and then look on Amazon.de - free postage ain't bad but as Greg pointed out - the dollar's not doing so well.
I often use the Amazon marketplace too. Second hand books - good for the environment |

or Ritchie sells English books on-line from Germany, and he was offering a discount up until end of last year. Kate | | | | | I second Kate's vote. Have bought from Book Depository many times. They got all my lunch money now.
Free shipping to anywhere, they say.

You can also try Stauffacher , pricey for English, but French titles are good value

I find that the savings from the book prices more than make up for shipping from the US, unless it's something you need urgently. Especially when it comes to big photo books.

I've ordered from Amazon.co.uk - it costs about gbp3 to get delivered and I've (not yet) had to pay any tax.

I agree that BookDepository are very good. OTOH support a Forum Member (myself!) and buy from www.english-book-service.com - we deduct German VAT (7% on books) on all sales to Switzerland automatically and charge just EUR 3 per order for postage irrespective of how many books you order. Discounts for fellow forum members shipping to Switzerland - sure just ask me for the discount code and will mail to you.
All the best

Another thing I do is go and check out the books at Orrell Fussli English speaking one (eg. theres one in Zurich) and then order them online -amazon.uk or amazon.de (free shipping for books), or ebay (uk) whichever is cheapest |

The "not for sale in the U.S." sticker on the European version usually cuts the price in half... amazon.de and the amazon marketplace are my favorites...

In Kanton Bern, some of the Loeb stores also have a small English section.
