Workshop/hacker space for rent in Basel?

Hey everyone. I'm still trying to get used to not having the space/permission to construct, repair, or generally work on anything in, or near my apartment. Is anyone aware of any workshop spaces for rent in the Basel area? Specifically one that would allow (on the extreme end) shooting paint, and welding/brazing with an oxy/acetylene torch? Perhaps a hacker space, or other community building platform? Thanks for the help!

You will find more over the border in Weil am Rhein or Lörrach.

Re: Workshop/hacker space for rent in Basel?

I haven't been able to locate anything anywhere. Is there something specific I should call these spaces that might aid with a search?

Does anyone know if I can at least rent a paint booth somewhere for an hour?

Have you tried homegate.ch?

Good luck in your search!

Thanks, I did try that. I couldn't find anything that rents for short time periods, or that would be legal to do what I'm trying to do.

"Bastelraum" is the word you probably need to look for, although I don't know how easy they are to come by or whether they generally allow the kinds of things you want to do.

Yeah, I came across these a few times. It seems the hobby rooms are only for hobbies that don't involve power tools, paint, torches, chemicals, or fun. So knitting maybe? These are also all monthly. I was hoping for something short term, and organized that I could come and go from.

Have you looked for hobby rooms? I am not sure if they allow welding, but some hammering/sawing and whatnot is often allowed.

Re: Workshop/hacker space for rent in Basel?

I've searched extensively. As far as I'm aware, there are no rental work spaces, nor organized member spaces anywhere in, or around Basel. A quick glance at the rest of Switzerland yielded similar findings. It seems it is also illegal to weld, braze, or even do mechanical repairs in one's own garage...even if you own the house.

I'm starting to get aggravated at the state of things here. What do people do for fun here other than buy $500 hiking boots to walk on a paved path? Everything else seems illegal.

By far the closest thing I've seen so far, thanks. A shame it's in Zurich, but good for an emergency fix.

I've been looking for the exact same thing in Lausanne and haven't had any luck so far. Has anyone heard of a metalshop or a woodworking shop or just a big concrete room where I can weld for a few hours a month in Lausanne?

I know I'm a bit late to this thread -- but did you ever find something? Am also in Basel (just moved this fall) and am looking for something similar.

If I was in your shoes, and unable to find a suitable room, I'd think about teaming up. For instance, any racing club (Verein), be it car, bike, boat or whatever, probably has very similar needs.

I never did, but I would not be opposed to seeking out a legal space for serious "hobbying" as a group. I don't have a tremendous amount of time to dedicate to finding something (grad-school), but I'm not useless either. Anyone else interested in a shared commercial space for something more hardcore than puzzles?

Yes. I'm in a similar spot time-wise, but would love to be able to access a workshop. (Last time I asked something similar, a couple of more baselites did express interest, so... bump!)

Hi, BotSpanx,

There is a hackerspace called Starship Factory, near Dreispitz and St. Jakob, which has a lot of maker stuff, although no welding yet (but it is strongly desired to get the right equipment). Feel free to drop by.
