EF at its very best ....

Sometimes EF really comes up trumps.

So someone give a butcher's block for free- I really want it, but can't fetch from Zurich- so someone offers to pick it up and store it for me- 3 months later that person delivers it with GF, re-builds it and even sands it down and re-oil- in exchange for a week-end of discovery here.

Brilliant

How has EF helped you in a way which goes beyond expectations?
Your story please.

Re: EF at its very best ....

Just last week I had:

1. one of the mods help me out with (more details in its own thread) - during what turned out to last most of the afternoon - swap out a derailleur that was apparently older than I am with a new one. Eventually we (mostly him) sawed off a cable lined with steel to adapt one of the older parts such that a more regular cable could connect to the modern derailleur.

2. one of the regulars (which is apparently now with a full PM box) volunteered to take a microwave I was selling from Basel to a prospective buyer in Zurich (paying himself for the microwave in advance).

Re: EF at its very best ....

Before I became a fan of Nespresso, I wanted to give it a try and buy a second hand machine. A nice forum member gave me hers for free!!! And an other one gave me a small package of different flavor for free!!!

When I was pregnant, I was craving cupcakes and asked for recipe. A nice forum member sent cupcakes by mail!!!

An other nice lady of this forum made two beautiful sweaters for my two munchkins!!

Can't wait to come back in CH and have these people in my life again!

Real quality people, I am telling ya

Re: EF at its very best ....

Years ago, my OH became an EF member. Her first two or three posts were full of typos because her brain always is way ahead of her fingers. Although her profile said that she was a writer and her native language was English, not a single EFer made fun of her. Now that's quite something!

Anyway, she was so ashamed, she never posted again.

P.S. Forgtot to mention: Her posts were about homeopathy, and not even that made anybody ball her out.

Re: EF at its very best ....

We've sold a car through the EF and more.

There really are some great people here. I think the EF has become, for me, a lot like a "home away from home. " Sometimes daily life here in CH can feel so redundant. I love that I can come here and never know what I'm going to find. And as an added bonus, it's likely that I'll also find something to make me laugh so hard I almost pee my pants.

So... thank you, to all of you, who help make the EF what it is!

And to top it all, 2 lovely walks to the Creux-du-Van and the Gorges de l'Areuse in the sun- and 2 lovely meals in a couple of our local mountain inns. Raining now- but who cares

Re: EF at its very best ....

Where to start?
1.One couple acted as a translator when I had my attack at the HB at the police station on a Saturday afternoon.
2 One member sent me Coop stickers to help finance new glass ware
3 One member sent me their old un used garbage bags
4 When I was in financial difficult, and looking for a job, one member sold me his computer without payment, in lieu of when I turned things around to pay him back
5 A great deal of my apartment and house are furnished with EF members gives and ridiculously low priced goods.
6 One member had me over for Grappa and good conversation after he volunteered to borrow me his straps so I could transport my motorcycle
7 When I put up ads for car repair or the like, I almost never get any pms from people that want a job, always from those that want a beer and conversation while they work for free.
8 One forum member, that gets a lot of bad rep, advised me in a personal matter that can could potentially save me 200k, and a lot of pain.
9 One forum member, that I used to publicly bad mouth, and I have heard nothing but negative comments about him that do not know him, in a time of friend's death offered to pay my flight back to the states. And since knowing him think he is one of most genuine and kind people I have met in my life.
10 And one forum member, when I first came to Switzerland, did a normal thing, just tried to make me feel welcome here.

I have had negative experiences as well. But, this is a pretty thread.

Re: EF at its very best ....

With all the advice, tips, suggestions from here, I found it was easier to make the decision to move here; easier to find an apartment; easier to understand the Swiss culture, etc. As a result this family is happy, and feeling settled despite only arriving to this country 4 months ago. Thanks (in part) to EF, Zurich is now home

Erhm. Thanks for the music, laughters, sorrow, exasperation....and all the feelings that make us humans.
I've made two good friends through EF, and a few others I don't know in real life. I guess that was a good experience, after all. Surpassed any expectation I had when I joined this forum.
