Shipping from Australia to Switzerland

Hi,

Just after some advice on which shipping companies are good/bad for our move from Australia to Switzerland and costs from previous experiences.

Depending on the price differences we will either send some boxes or get part of a shipping container so we can take a couple more items (e.g. our primo grill and table) but otherwise we're thinking about buying all new furniture when we get there.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Shipping from Australia to Switzerland

Hi,

We used Australian Vanlines when we moved from Melbourne - Chur a couple of years ago. We had a good experience with them, packing our goods, paperwork etc. We had around 20-25 boxes of clothing, children's toys and small misc items.

It was organised by my husbands company though, so I'm not sure of the costs. Might be a good place to start though. Hope that helps

Thanks for that I will look them up. We won't be to far from Chur, so glad to know they go there.

They worked in conjunction with the local delivering agent (Grischun something-or-other) who were also very good.

Re: Shipping from Australia to Switzerland

I used OSS World Wide Movers. At the departure end at least the service was really good: replies to emails always immediate, and they have proved flexible too (because of other travels I want the stuff to arrive no earlier than 5 months after packing, and then my temporary->permanent housing arrangements caused a further delay at my end and they simply extended the storage time in Sydney a bit, for a small charge). Can't comment on the service at the CH end as I have yet to arrive myself. But so far so good.

They also (over)packed everything so incredibly thoroughly that come autumn I will post a "does anyone want boxes and approx 2km of industrial strength bubble wrap" message...

Re: Shipping from Australia to Switzerland

I would not recommend our movers, but we chose to send things by air rather than sea because the cost was only about 25% more for very fast delivery.

The fact that the removalists could only give us a 'many months' timeframe on the sea shipment, we decided it was not worth the uncertainty.

We had problems with the customs clearing at the airport and they demanded additional costs on arrival. This made us very annoyed because we were promised 'door to door' from Australia. They stuffed us around and we left the shipment with the whilst they fixed the paperwork. Which probably cost them a lot more money!

Anyway, we sent two shipments. The essential was 2.5 cubic meters by air, and the second 5.5 cubic meters by air. Ended up costing about 7000Aud. I definitely would not bring any furniture. The second hand market for furniture is very easy to access and you can hire a van from ikea or pay someone to deliver your stuff on arrival.

The other thing with air freight is that it is measured usually by kilograms, and sea fright by volume, so it does depend on what you are sending over.

It is easy to get adapters for the electricals, as the voltage is the same, but electricals seem to be significantly cheaper here (and also second hand easy to get) so unless they are high ticket items I would just replace them or stick to 'essentials'. Our first shipment we just sent essential clothing, kids stuff, one of everything for the kitchen and bathroom and some personal stuff, as well as tools/equipment for work purposes.

We bought a new Mac mini and monitor on arrival and had a laptop plus external hard drive that came on the plane (not in luggage)!

Everything else best to save your money and purchase on arrival....unless the employer is paying for he whole shipment...and you are staying long-term...

Sorry, but you forgot to mention what company you used. I'm looking at shipping quotes now and want to stay clear of any companies that aren't reliable.

That's OK. It was a long time ago.

Are you going Zurich-Sydney or Sydney-Zurich ?

Re: Shipping from Australia to Switzerland

Actually it's Switzerland - Perth. But I figured it'd be pretty much the same

No, I would say not... Customs clearance is quite different... swizterland there were lots of documents, Australia you will have the added problem of potentially needing to fumigate your whole container and having everything inspected to make sure there are not any animal or plant products that pose a risk.

plus, some companies specialise in 'inbound' and some with 'outbound'...

If I needed to do it again, though, I would definitely toss up air-freight vs sea...
