Question about medical documentation

Hello,
Does anyone have any experience with taking the medical documentation from the doctor? I'm visiting ophthalmologist in Switzerland, but now I would like to go for a double check of the diagnosis/treatment etc to another doctor (either on French or Suisse side). And it would be good to have all the documentation with me.
I know that in different countries rules for handling medical documentation slightly differ. Is it enough to go and request handing out of the documentation?

And one more additional question - does anyone know a good English speaking ophthalmologist (dry eye + conjunctivitis + potentially other undiagnosed problems) in the Genève area? I know of the Ophthalmic Hospital in Lausanne (but I have one month till the scheduled visit)...

Cheers,
MH

Re: Question about medical documentation

I don't know if dentistry is different, but...

I have been seeing a dentist here and at one stage asked him if I could have all the info as I might leave the country etc.

He said it was not a problem and that he would do so with pleasure.

I might be wrong, but I think amongst doctors the information should be made available. A different opthalmologist should have access to another's records of you.

This needs to be checked though.

Re: Question about medical documentation

We recently asked my wife's doctor if we could take a copy of her medical records with us if we left the country and we were told it would not be a problem . In fact , she even asked if we needed a letter written out , summarizing the whole thing and providing a referral . Not sure if this is only for certain branches of medicine ( Rheuma in this case ) but I guess it should apply across the profession .

Re: Question about medical documentation

Since you are the subject of the file, you have immediate access to it and are entitled to do with it as you please. Especially so as you paid for every single IRM, X-ray, amnioscopy - whatever it is.

The doctor might not like it that you go see someone else but there is no rule forbidding you to move over your file.

You might want to see Mrs. Panarello , I am told good things about her.

No problems anticipated. Your new doctor can easily get your records from the previous doctor. Give your new doctor a written authorization to process. Also phone your previous doctor's office and tell them your intentions.
