There are many second-hand - sorry, vintage - clothing stores in the Zurich region where you can pick up some natty threads at really great prices. I was visiting a store in Rapperswil (OK, not technically Zurich) with some friends at the weekend and found some fantastic shades (Persol) and a belt (Ted Baker, yay!), while a couple of female friends found über-sexy shoes (Kurt Geiger) and dresses (ETRO, Max Mara, Ellie Saab), at a fraction of their retail cost.

This had me thinking of all the second-hand stores out there and the quality of goods for sale. This is Switzerland, after all, and they don't take H&M.

I thought of starting this thread where maybe you can recommend a second-hand store you like. I'm amazed at the number of them, once I've started noticing them, especially in Zurich Seefeld.

To kick-off, the store in Rappi is called:

Gwand aus Zweite Hand, Seestrasse 9 (website here)

They're mainly women's wear. The woman running the store is mega-friendly and spoke English.

Any others out there you can recommend (especially for Mens wear!)?

Just the thread I was looking for, I'm going to a mates stag do next month, and a suggested theme was Beastie Boys, a la "Sabotage", 70s suits, moustaches and aviator shades. So may need to find a place selling 70/80s suits, if anyone knows of such a place.

For 'kitschy' clothes, perhaps a Brockenhaus would be the best place? I was thinking more of stores where you'd actually want to wear the clothes they have for sale!

I know a few nice secondhand addresses in Amsterdam, but cannot contribute actively for Zürich, unfortunately.

There's the famous Razzo (mens and womens) beyond the Niederdorf, near Neumarkt (map link), opposite the (excellent) restaurant Bauernschänke.

I've taken a few things down there and you get your 50% in no time. The store is run strictly - no un-ironed shirts, muddy paw-printed Barbour coats thank you very much - and you will get turned away if your kit doesn't suit. But you know you'll get a good deal if you buy something

Sister of the fundsachenverkauf (the place where they sell on the lost and abandoned luggage and contents), the fundgarderobe sells on clothing that has been lost or abandoned somewhere in one of the various transport networks. In theory, as these clothes have been mislaid accidentally, they should be of current acceptable styles.

There's a good 2nd hand store just by Bahnhof Stadelhofen, opposite Commercio - sorry, can't remember what it's called, but you can't miss it. I drive past every day and they have some really good stuff in the window (mostly ladies' clothes, I believe children's clothes as well).

mmm, I can get used almost everything, ( cars, sports equipment, guitars, furniture, appliances etc etc )

But I couldn't wear used clothing. mmmm

It's a demographic attribute; the higher the status, the more likely you'll find people willing to wear second hand stuff. The lower the demographic, the less likely people will buy it.

See the quality of the stuff on offer here and *maybe* you'd change your mind

I agree that some "high end" or "prestige" stuff that is expensive is worth to be paid cheaper when second hand.

But, for once. Some expensive stuff is just expensive for the brand label and not really for the quality.

Take for example a Dolce & Gabanna suit, yes they are better than a Manor branded suit but the D&G costs 2500 CHF and the Manor one maybe 400 CHF. but the D&G is not 6 times better quality.

Now, the D&G suit is a fused suit ( the fronts are glued to a plastic layer in the middle ), just like Boss, Strellson and many other labels. If you take a real canvas constructed suit ( they have a middle sewn layer between the fronts and the lining ) that is much better quality like a Canali, Corneliani or Pal Zileri, they cost 1250 CHF on a shop like Bon Genie or Jelmoli, but can be bought still new and discounted between $ 500-700 on some Italian discount shops.

I tell you, I'll take absolutely the new Canali for 700 over a second hand D&G for 700.

Then, the second argument, Is that if you want to wear prestige clothing you should be able to pay for it. Buy a used clothing just to show it is a posseur thing for me and it is much worse to my eyes than wearing a new but not so prestigious ( but still high quality ) item bought new.

I wasn't clear: I didn't mean the 'cost' of the clothing, rather people from the upper demographics won't have a problem wearing second hand clothes, but it's unusual to find people from poorer backgrounds buying second-hand. It's a class issue.

Walk through Liverpool these days and you'd be amazed with the clothes people wear (when not wearing sports clothes!) and more importantly the cost of the clothes they wear. They are clearly telegraphing the cost, hence the gratuitous displays of Bling.

I wouldn't wear a D&G suit anyway, but you'd think they were H&M the number of people who do wear them there. It's all about the Bling, which - mercifully - the Swiss don't show-off. (Unless you go to the Carlton bar!)

My experience has been there are lots of good shops in the region which provide high-end ranges (regardless of actual desireability / quality of construction) on the grounds that people buy good clothes here and are not ashamed to wear second hand. What you won't find are D&G t-shirts, Armani sweaters and oh well, it's probably wishful thinking, Polo shirts

Anyway, there are great deals out there, irrespective of whether you'd wear them or not

where has the anti-polo shirt thing come from? talacker a few weeks ago i was "dad shirt" for wearing a scruffy (fake fred perry) polo shirt. now they are too bling. i know i'm unfashionable, accept it, and sometimes even enjoy it. just don't get the polo shirt thing. are they *still* bling in liverpool? and for some reason "dad" in australia?

next time i will defiantly wear every polo shirt i own simultaneously.

Rock 'n' Roll. I wore my (only, genuine) Fred Perry top at the Talacker once and had someone ask me if I'd just come from 'games'.

It was anonymous tailored suits from then on...

Ralph Lauren Polo shirts are messy. Avoid. At least in a suit you could be anyone. In RL you're just a only joking

i think "prep"/"preppy" is positive/negative depending on who says it. but then i guess so is "bling". i thought polo shirts (at least unbranded) were about as normal as it got after plain black t-shirts. at least that's how it was at eton.
