Re: Working in Ticino but staying in Lugano, Como or Milan?

actually, Sundays might see you take longer - if you pass by from 1030 onwards, you'll see why.

Weekdays I see no reason why it might be 20 minutes or so. How deep into Stabio must you go - practically all the way to Gaggiolo?

My wife used to life 100m from the border, so it used to take 30 min from Lugano North in the best of conditions (on a bike).

Actually Paradiso should be pretty good though there's a bit of traffic there too. Be sure to get your own parking place there, trust me.

Everything depends on the comparison. Lugano, a very nice place, is NOT expensive at all by Zürich standards
I love Lugano. It is wonderful.
However it is a small town (app 65,000), so limited night life.
Personnally I would suggest InterNations and/or a sports club to meet others.

It may be inexpensive compared to Zürich (what isn't??), but it is pretty expensive compared to anywhere else...

Lugano is a major city, not a small town.

Re: Working in Ticino but staying in Lugano, Como or Milan?

Hi guys

Although this thread was a few months ago, hope it's still active. I am with the same scenario. Am considering to take up an offer in Stabio, but am used to bigger city life. Somewhere with good restaurants/food, good nightlife, easy to meet new friends and relatively safe.. What about Varese how is this option compare to Lugano or Como?

Hi dablue
Where did you ended up staying and any feedback?

Cheers!

Re: Working in Ticino but staying in Lugano, Como or Milan?

Varese probably is more quiet than both Lugano and Como, there are some good restaurants but you can go there from lugano too (like everybody does), it's not a touristic place like lugano and como, I think its glory days were until WW2 when it had big industries now it looks like a provincial city, although it has a european school and there may be some expats in the area because there's a EU research center in ispra, it also has a university but it's not internationalized at all, in the international department lugano wins hands down imho.
It has some nice places but it has grown like a tumor so it's very disorganized, the roads are among the worst i've seen regarding potholes but also intersections, the traffic is incredibly bad especially during rush hour because a lot of people commute to switzerland or milan area. There's no railway to Lugano yet either.
Around Lugano you can get some of the highest quality of life in the world, for me there would be no doubt, as for friends i guess that can be hard anywhere so i would prefer to stick to what i know. Anyway just go there and see for yourself.

Hey there.
First of all welcome to EF.
Second - you'd really need to fill us in some more details... What about schools / kids / partner, etc?
What are your expectations vs. where you live now?
Big city life (e.g. New York) vs. anything that is around here - we're talking about different planets, really.
Entertainment:
I'll find you X number of good (and expensive) restaurants, no problem. Is the view on Lake Como enough to keep you entertained or do you need, say, Covent Garden noise and bustle?
And anyway I echo previous comments: Stabio is ground zero as far as traffic is concerned, especially if you're commuting with the flow (and I KNOW).
But then again maybe you're used to 8 lane US style gridlock and a daily 2 hr commute... it's all relative at the end of the day
Ciao
Paul

Re: Working in Ticino but staying in Lugano, Como or Milan?

Hi dear friends,

I'm a single male 26 years old, never visited Europe before and now I get an opportunity to study at aviotrace swiss in Mendrisio for about 1 year and few months, I have done alot of search about where to stay and read every comment in this thread and found that few people want to stay in mendrisio itself , they prefer either lugano or como but its still rather ambiguous to me and need some help please :
My income would be about 3k CH /month so for living I have to stay with two or three of my colleagues to share the living price .

I like to spend about 30-45 mins in the morning in the buses or trains to get to my study place cause I like to see sights and maybe in touch with people and make new friends during that period , u know
I like nightlife activity i'm thinking of Lugano paradiso but I need your suggestions please

I dont know which is better , to rent a furnished apartment or not furnished or to stay in a hotel anyway that doesnt matter now I just need to decide which place to stay in at first

I like visiting other cities during weekends and holidays I love to visit as much cities as I can during my stay .

sorry for that long information ,would be appreciated for any help

Re: Working in Ticino but staying in Lugano, Como or Milan?

If you have the opportunity to live with colleagues i would go for that coz then you can go out toghether etc., even if it's in mendrisio lugano is just 20 minutes of train away, living with other people is better especially if you know it's just for one year, regardless of how much money you make. Hotel is not feasible price-wise i think.
Anyway to see sights it's better to have more free time instead of losing 1h30' a day commuting.

Mendrisio will be much less expensive than Lugano or Paradiso.

Only if they are all Swiss.

Otherwise, two.

Also, that's in Rancate, 3km from Mendrisio.

it's 3 rooms so only 2 bedrooms... it's gonna be hard if not impossible to find a 4 bedroom furnished apartment though.

Also, as a non-EU national remember you can't live in Italy, only Switzerland, so Como and Milan are out of the picture. Your Swiss permit will not allow you to live anywhere other than in canton Ticino.
