Where to buy an apron with sleeves / overalls?

I've just started taking pottery classes. I had great fun today, but I came home with my sleeves covered in clay (they kept slipping down and I was working on the wheel...)

I think I need an apron with sleeves or overalls or whatever you call them...

Something like this.

Any ideas of where I could find one? I've searched Hornbach's website, Coop Brico-Loisirs and Opitec...

Also, what is the French for something like that? I looked in an online dictionary and found the word 'salopette', but that seems to mean dungarees (and sounds very unfortunately like a vulgarism).

I'm limited to public transport, can get to Lausanne, Etoy, Allaman easily...

My son takes pottery classes too, and he simply puts on a wide old long-sleeved shirt over his normal clothes.

Re: Where to buy an apron with sleeves / overalls?

Wouldn't any oversized shirt work?

The images of example you posted do not seem to be any water-resistant type fabric - if you are looking for something more specifically fit-for-purpose maybe an art-supply store.

I've just scrolled through my SIL's instagram and she and her students just roll up their sleeves - isnt't at least 40% of the joy of working with clay is the water-soluble mess? If you are interested in Steampunk check out "hanforsbruk" on Instagram.

(I have always thought salopettes is the word Brits use to sound posh when referring to ski trousers)

Re: Where to buy an apron with sleeves / overalls?

I did initially think of an old shirt.

But being female I don't have any, and my dad doesn't have any old shirts (how careless of him...).... and if I'm going to have to pay to buy something I'd rather buy something that covers my lap and knees as well as my front. I don't mind getting messy, but I live in a group home, and I don't think I'm going to be very popular if I'm putting a clay-covered jumper, kitchen apron and jeans in the machine every week... I have a horrible feeling it won't be very good for it. So I'd rather have one item that I can just wash every so often.

I can send you a large old shirt if you want.

Re: Where to buy an apron with sleeves / overalls?

I got a white lab type overcoat thing at the thrift store. I don't know if there is one near you. But maybe try there first. It shouldn't be more than a few francs. And if they don't have one you can surely find a large oversized man's shirt.

If you can't find anything suitable, I'm sure I can dig out the lab coat thing or a large man's shirt for you.

It so pleases my heart when people offer to help, immediately, pragmatically and generously, as you, Belgianmum and you, MiniMia, have done here. Thank you!

Thank you Belgianmum and miniMia. Once again the English Forum comes up trumps... not one offer of a shirt, but two!

Errr... how do I decide whose offer to take up?!?

Try Belgianmum first, as miniMia said she'd have to hunt for hers?

Hey, I offered a lab coat... That has to be worth more!

And if I have to up the ante, I could dig up a chef's jacket complete with chef's hat and apron.

No please take mine. There are several specimens in my husband's wardrobe that I would be really happy never to see again.

As for a chef's outfit I may be needing one if those soon if the boy continues in his desire to be a chef.

Re: Where to buy an apron with sleeves / overalls?

I was planning to jump in with the shirt idea (I have a few that aren't suitable for the fashion conscious Swiss scene) but I am a bit late.

Plus with the new info suggesting the need for something that covers at least down to the knees shirts might not be the best option.

So, my revised suggestion is to use a pair of men's cotton/flannel pj's thereby covering completely whatever you are wearing and are easily washable. Someone (not me unfortunately) might have one to contribute. They would need a rough idea of your size ie. are you more a 34/36, 38/40 or 42/44 etc. to try to match that up to the Men's S/M/L.

That reminds me of a Fred Basset cartoon where the wife is seen gleefully burning her husband's favourite shirt with a hot iron...

Yes please. I think you have my address?

Sorry for the delay in replying, I had a bad 'blip'... feeling better today, thankfully.
