Re: Arrive in 2 weeks, what to bring?

a few Photos of family and friends

It is a comfort to have those around, & a talking point when you invite the neighbours when you first move in, for coffee/cake.

If you like baking it's worth bringing self-raising flour, baking powder, cream of tartar, bicarbonate of soda, muscovado sugar. As some or all either not available or hard to find

No more than 1kg per person. That's how much meat you're allowed to bring in.

You can get bacon here, but it's cut very thinly.

Marmite is available in some Co-ops, but very small jars. You can get bigger jars in some of the Indian shops, but at a price. Tea-bags and Marmite are pretty much all we import from the UK when we visit nowadays. Bulk medication can be bought a far more reasonable prices (that CH) in Germany.

It's not the same. The local bacon is mostly fat.

But not in pieces.

Remember, only 1 kilo per (alive) person.

You can pretty much get everything here now at a price.. I notice that edeka in Konstanz also has a rapidly growing english selection.

Back bacon and good beef is what you can't get.

Had some pro-montana fruhstucks bacon from coop today and must say its not bad for a streaky bacon.

I am surprised Tom didn't (yet) groan at any of you!!!

LOCAL products are the nicest!!!

Btw teamj&j, except (maybe) for muscovado sugar all of them are available and easy to find in Ch..
In fact, after I googled "muscovado"....even muscovado sugar can be found in any bio shop (try Reformhaus which has branches all over the country)

I am making a note of all these items thanks.

The apartment is lacking light fittings and curtains at the moment, so wondering if UK light fittings can be used? I have the measurements of the windows and will be making curtains, hopefully before I arrive, or will bring the material with me.

Would it be easy for me to bring meat over in my luggage? Never tried before, so don't really know if that is possible?

Chocolate will have to bought as and when I want it, if I bought over any quantity it would just be eaten double quick, so no point really.
In Zurich the curtain tracks are diffierent, so is the curtain tape, hooks etc. So it might be better to wait until you arrive to make them.

packet of paracetamol here costs a tenner
I don't know where you're buying your paracetamol from here but i's advise you to change shops. Yes it us much more expensive than the UK but us nowhere near a tenner a packet. ( unless it's a big packet go the strong ones).
You must ask for paracetamol or ibuprofen by that name though and not the brand ( Neurofen, Panadol etc) if you want to get the cheaper generics.

It is still a good idea to bring a supply from the UK though especially if you use them regularly.

We don't really bring anything much back these days. We've been away from the UK for so long we've got used to the local stuff and what we can't get here we've learned to live without.

I would recommend bringing plenty of clothes with you and if female stock up on nice underwear before you come.

I would definitely stock up in Boots on beauty items and drugs (paracetamol, ibruprofen etc) as mentioned above, it's much more expensive here.
