Web design: anyone have experience with Squarespace.com?

Someone asked me to setup a small e-commerce site and wants to use Squarespace.com.
Just wondering if anyone here has had any experience with this service. The reviews I've found on the web are really just an endless litany of Squarespace vs. Wordpress / Joomla / etc (in favor of the former).

I do have multi-year experience with WP (started way back in 2.9) and have tried Joomla, Drupal and Typo3, just want some real feedback from Squarespace users.

Cheers

Paul

Well from what I know, Joomla is a CMS and Wordpress is for blogs, both are not e-commerce sites, but might have ecommerce templates available for them. Other popular systems include Drupal, Magento and CMS lite.

You need to check out templates and see which one suits you, then look for reviews. Below is an example of a template shop you might choose to look at. Free templates are great, but all the coding you will need to do to get them looking great, might not be worth the effort.

Thank you for taking your time and apologies for not having been more precise in my initial post (which I've redacted to state that I do have CMS experience).

I am a squarespace user with no previous experience in setting up a website. It was easy to use and the templates are great. It is widely used by professional photographers. Here is our site: jamieanneramos.com

Re: Web design: anyone have experience with Squarespace.com?

Squarespace have a trial period (a month, I think) where you can try it out without having to enter credit card details. The ads say it's easy to set up an e-commerce site (but then they would, wouldn't they?). I guess you can have a go, and if it doesn't suit you, just abandon it.

If you do sign up, then use code "ALLUSION" to get 10% off for your first year (not my affiliate code, but one from a podcast I listen to).

Re: Web design: anyone have experience with Squarespace.com?

With the basic squarespace package you can only sell one product. The mid-price offer lets you sell 20.

Payment options might be restrictive (Switzerland is sort of supported through a private beta on Stripe - how that translates into your squarespace experience I have no idea) and there's a transaction fee of like 3% or whatever.

It's easy to make really nice sites but I'm not sure I'd use it to set up an e-commerce site that wasn't based in the States and selling 99% to the States.

Another option is Shopify - I haven't used it yet but might do for a project I'll do in the coming months. (If you find a better one let me know!) Here's a comparison thing.

Aha - good point. This site would be used to sell some kind of newsletter so maybe it could work.

Re: Web design: anyone have experience with Squarespace.com?

I build PrestaShop, OpenCart and ZenCart webshops. These are open source, so no monthly fee like Shopify. PM me for more info.

Re: Web design: anyone have experience with Squarespace.com?

I have setup a couple of e-commerce sites using Squarespace and my clients are happy with the finished product. Stripe is in beta but works well. One of the sites moved from shopify to Squarespace and the other from wordpress but the latter wasn't yet setup as an e-commerce. Hope this helps.
