Ah yes xenon lights must have the washer system installed..
Could someone please elaborate on what changes need to be done to the vehicle? The car is quite new (2013). I have head some people mention the lights. Would this be something that we can take care of in Canada before we ship it?

Certainly if you have a piece of string

To know for sure email your VIN number to a Swiss VW garage and ask them, and preferably in the kanton you will be living, as they will be able to access the specs for your car. Bear in mind there are still no guarantees that the inspector wouldn't find something on testing anyway.

Sounds like you've committed to bringing it so tbh you may as well just see what they say when you go to register it and hope for nothing. A5 Audi are 2 a penny here, and for all the hassle, time, hassle, paperwork, and cost I personally I wouldn't bother.

Papa Goose, can you please clarify why you wouldn't bother with moving it? The way I understand, it costs around 2K to ship it, and probably not much to register it as we are expats who will likely return to Canada in a few years (at which point we could ship the car back or sell it in another country). Buying a new car in Europe/Switzerland would be far more expensive. I had budgeted that total costs would be no more than 3-4K. Am I missing something major?

I don't know what more you want?

There may be (or not) expensive mods to the car, so your "not much to register" is a rather large variable, and until the inspector gets his hands on it you, it's all potential. Like I said the guy who sourced, bought and shipped a Californian Porker ended up at CHF 13K (without the works to to Swissify the xenons) to get it registered. So by the time he'd got it on the road he actually spent more, took longer, and stressed him out more than buying one here.

Other than A5, you have never said what flavour, so it's kind broadbrush, but they can be had here for as little as CHF 22k or as much as 63 on Autoscout, and those prices are typically 20-30% OTT:
http://www.autoscout24.ch/de/autos/5...12&yearto=2013

In the EU they are even cheaper (or more expensive) than here thanks to the strong CHF:
http://www.autoscout24.eu/ListGN.asp...&flzh=1&desc=1

Like I said potential is the key. It could cost you very little, could cost you big... so go with what you feel, but for me unless it was something special, I'd sell there and lease here, then if you do go back to Canada return the car or sell the lease on.

Re: Shipping car from Canada to Switzerland

Personally if it has the washer system and self level headlights.. if it has xenon lights which I assume it does then I would bring it. I know many people that have brought their cars over without issue despite the 'scare stories' The last guy who is swiss but was living in NY brought his car over and was told as it's part of your possessions (and not just bought for import) then different rules apy and he didn't have to do anything to.the vehicle. It was on swiss plates within a week.
