wildlife at 3am

I live in on a street in Zürich that is quiet enough to feel quiet but also close to busy streets with trams and buses. A few years ago, I used to hear foxes crying at night, also cat fights often, also birds being ripped apart (as it sounded), also unidentifiable 'heavy animal stuff' that used to climb up the building's exterior wisteria tree, quite often. Then it seemed to go quiet for at least two-three years.

Last night I was on my first night back from a trip and had jet lag and I gave up on sleeping at 3am and got up. I opened the curtains and looked out of the window and immediately, no delay, saw a fox go by. And literally 30 seconds later, I saw something that could have been a pine marten or polecat or similar (I am no expert) following the same route as the fox. What was amazing to me is that the one time that I look out of the window in the dead hours, and the wild animals are rolling by. I would have guessed that foxes and pine martens don't even get so close to each other but wrong. If you want to see Zürich wildlife activity, get up at 3am...

The foxes in my area are not shy. They even steal a shoe every now and then. My favorite is the sound of thousands of birds right before sunrise, chirping and squawking from every direction.

Ditto I love dawn birdsong. It does not make me wake up but I like to hear it and snooze on for an hour. Typically I hear Great Tits (squeaky bike wheels) before anything else and that is well before dawn - they seem to kick in while it's still dark. I am on an urban street with trees, there are street lights and city light, so I bet that our local birds are not typical of a country setting.

If you like foxes, the following is a brilliant essay - not a general topic, it's actually a political topic, so you could quickly decide if you like it or leave it, but it is about UK relationship with the fox -

You were not supposed to see that.

I'd stay indoors for the next few days, if I were you. Animals can be spiteful.

Here's an article about the fox population, which is apparently quite large:

http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/cities-d...-side/29419676

Even in Kreis 1 it's not uncommon to see them at night.

We're in Kreis 7, and the two fox that live in our neighbourhood don't wait for nightfall to come out. I see them almost every day.

I have seen one whole fox in Zug. I've seen several tails hanging from tractors. The farmers around here don't tolerate wildlife (Get off moi laaaand!!!).

I think i saw a ferret a few years ago in Geneva, "Furet" i think in French. Or is that a pine martin.

It was long and low and fast. Not a cat.

Re: wildlife at 3am

A furet is normally used for a polecat- recognisable from pine or beech martens (marte ou fouine) by its very marked 'mask' a bit like 1930s brogues. Its cousin is the tame domestic ferret- white albino.

I used to like driving fast at night, cutting corners- due to being able to see any other traffic- until I realised that this is the time most wildflife is about. One of my young neighbours hit a beautiful young female lynx on the main road near our house at 4am- sadly although she was split open all along the side- she didnt die and he had to call the 'garde faune' to put her down- tragic. To see a lynx once would really really be a dream. A wildlife camera caught a wolf in the woods behind our house a couple of years back- never seen of heard of again.

The wolf didn't like the mint sauce with your lamb. You stayed too long in Britain.

Amazing isn't it? We have it here in Zug as well and sometimes when Inleave my flat in the morning I often see many of these tiny cute birds in front of the building. It is beautiful sound, even at 4 am but it can get pretty intense and I know some people who complain about birds noise in the AM.

I love the roaring of the lions and the nocturnal elephant noises audible most nights in Binningen.

Re: wildlife at 3am

I think the foxes do rather well here in SUI. I used to live next to the forest in Basel Land and on 3 occasions a fox ambushed cats. At the same place. Just waited around a corner of the hedge and nailed any old or unlucky cat that didnt see it comming. All three times the cat hardly made a noise....

I have seen deer and foxes in Bruderholtz with young in tow. Martens. Some of them huge. About the size of a medium sized dog, but very low to the ground. Its like watching a big lizard walking.

Insomnia is great for watching wildlife at night.

Re: wildlife at 3am

We normally see a weasel / ferret type thing once a year. Typically, it sits on top of a car down the street.

Plenty of foxes around. Once there was a chase in our communal garden between three foxes and three cats. I got worried that the foxes would rip them to pieces but a bit of googling later and I found out that normally, the cats can more than hold their own, and the most likely outcome is a fox with a boxed nose.

Plenty of cats around our place, especially on summer nights when they do their patrols.

We also have a couple of hedgehogs living in a bush directly outside our bedroom.

We used to feed the birds bread (since stopped that) and sometimes a Hedgehog would appear. They seem to have a different sence of reality. Very different. Unfortunately not made for roads and traffic.

I thought it was a open and shut case with Fox Vs Cat. I did ignore a cats teeth and claws though. A sensible fox I guess has to respect that.
