This is one of Ruedi Roth's compositions for which he got a Hollywood Oscar:

And if you like the high-pitch voices, here they are! To have your balls kicked, you need to have them in the first place to stand in front of a crowd and perform this moving piece. Not given to everyone!

For what it's worth: a step by step to the basics:

http://www.wikihow.com/Yodel

The break in the voice is called "coup de glotte" in French and "Kehlkopfschlag" in German

And for a bit of background:

Re: Who wants to learn yodelling in Geneva?

It was LOVELY to actually meet face to face with a non-virtual EF member!

Great workshop, everyone who went had a brilliant time. And with 2 Brits, 1 Canadian and 2 Americans, the Anglophone ranks are "swelling"...well, a trickle really, but next time (March) we'll get LOADS of brave EFers, won't we?

Re: Who wants to learn yodelling in Geneva?

Good lord, that was a brilliant way to spend a Sunday. The singing was incredibly good fun and everyone I met was just adorable. I almost wish I lived closer so I could pop round for tea with my new friends every once in awhile.

Since the workshop I may or may not have been secretly viewing videos of Ruedi Roth and Toggenburger Naturjodel online. My one concern is that I live in an old block of flats with poor sound insulation and daren't risk disturbing the neighbours with my practicing. I need to think about potential practice locations a bit more...

I would highly recommend this experience to anyone with a remotely musical inclination and an open mind. The teachers were first rate, the participants were enthusiastic and the environment was soooo welcoming. Thanks so much McTAV for organizing, and bravo for the solo you sang. Very impressive! I'm in the midst of editing my photos and videos, will send them along as soon as I'm done.

Cheers,

H.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it and it was lovely meeting you! Yodelling in the car is a good place where you'll "disturb" no one or in a cable car off season! Barbara Klossner lives in a small flat in Bern and this does not deter her from yodelling with open windows, mind you, she is so brilliant, the neighbours did not seem to mind! Please, please, please...any picture, film you managed to take would be graciously welcome!

Solo yodelling...mmmm, nerve wrecking, I'd say! First time!

Next time you pop over to Geneva, you need to let us know. I'll introduce you to the rest of the family and we can all have a meal...without yodelling (not an interest shared by spouse and daughter!)
