Who wants to learn yodelling in Geneva?

On Sunday 4th October, the great Dame of Swiss yodelling herself, Barbara Klossner, and Oscar-winner Swiss yodel composer Ruedi Roth will give a workshop in Vesenaz, GE, from 9.30 a.m. till 3.00 p.m. It will be intensive but great fun (knowing Barbara personally, I can vouch for this!) and most importantly, you don't need to know any music!

The cost for the day is 110 CHF

If you are interested and wish to register, go on communes-ecoles.ch, select "Culture" then browse down to "Naturjodel". You then will get a pink slip and letter by post asking for payment once your registration is completed.

I also advise to check this clip from German TV where Barbara Klossner does a demonstration of her teaching methods, very revealing!

Barbara once told me: "to get to know, REALLY know, what is going on through a Swiss person's mind, listen to them yodel. The Swiss by nature don't reveal much emotionally, but when they yodel, you can see right though their soul". Very true!

Re: Who wants to learn yodelling in Geneva?

Apparently I sound like 'a cow in labour' when I try to sing... so much so that I swear my youngest son learned to speak at a frightening young age just so that he could say 'No, mummy. Stop' whenever I tried to sing him a lullaby.

Sounds like fun though, shame I'm away that weekend.

I understand Thursday is the deadline for registering, just in case! What is the emoticon for "yodelling"?

Re: Who wants to learn yodelling in Geneva?

Seriously tempted.

Do you have any other takers?

Are we required to wear dirndls with plaits/lederhosen with braces?

Will there be a "Yodel Idol" competition at the end? Do tell.

H.

PS-Here's the best smiley I could find...

At 110 CHuff´s I would yodel like a native, it´s easy to learn though, you just need to sing. "are you going to get the wireless or am I going to get the wirless" in German: "hol du die radio oder hol i die radio?"

I believe 15 people have registered so far, no idea if any from EF. You can be tune-death and as unmusical as can be (I cannot read music scores myself!), as long as you're in for either a bit of fun or simply because Swiss yodel triggers something within you...think how popular you'd be with yodelling as your next party piece! Lederhosen are not Swiss (they were too poor in the old days to afford leather, I know, hard to believe!). The workshop is partly in French, partly in English (there are usually 2 or 3 Brits around to translate, and of course some bits of Swiss-Germans...somehow, we all seem to understand each other!

Re: Who wants to learn yodelling in Geneva?

Ha, but Slammer, simply by using the "i" sound, you've already disqualified yourself from the Swiss Yodel Finals! The "i" sound is only found in the "jolly" Bavarian and Austrian yodels. In Swiss yodel, you are allowed:

Jo lo ho/o lü u

That in itself was worth 10 CHF, wasn't it?

Also, think practically: what a way to integrate yourself to Swiss culture...I can't believe you won't be given accelerated Swiss citizenship once you've started yodelling at the immigration officer!

I have indeed registered, and speak English and French so language won't be a problem. I'm actually really looking forward to this, it's going to be a lot of fun!

I am trying to attach music files with basic yodels to keep you going, but not sure if it's worked.

Guilty as charged, the "I" is a giveaway, lucky thing you don't have to yodel here on Malta, although when I hear some of the locals singing, I'm not too sure.

Perhaps it's the wrong file type or else it's too big. The allowed file extensions are bmp doc gif jpe jpeg jpg pdf png psd txt zip and the largest size a .zip file can be is 976.6 KB. So if you're trying to attach mp3s, it won't work...

(Another gratuitous Switzerland-related smiley. I can't get enough of them.)

Besides Heather, has anyone else from EF registered for this workshop? If yes, are you "yodel beginners/complete novice"? I need to know so that Barbara Klossner and Ruedi can adapt their workshop accordingly.

Cheers.

Why? To reach the high pitch notes? Not if you're bass 2 voice or voice 1 and 4 in yodel. Another misconception about Swiss yodel. Go and kick some Austrian or Bavarian balls!

This is one of Ruedi Roth's compositions for which he got a Hollywood Oscar:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9h-_LTOsqw

And if you like the high-pitch voices, here they are! To have your balls kicked, you need to have them in the first place to stand in front of a crowd and perform this moving piece. Not given to everyone!

And once you've become a millionaire and drunk up all your Champagne and fulfilled all your dreams, maybe there will be, very, very deep down, one little regret that you had not had a go at yodelling!
