Finding a person from St. Gallen

Have been thinking a while about posting here, but now it's time..
I had contact with a person for about a year, talking and writing emails to each other. You can call it soul mates. The person had some trouble and I haven't heard from him/her since February. I am really, REALLY concerned and worried something has happened. I have the name and a palace where the person is raised and worked/lived but not more than that. The email is out of use just like the Skype account.

Is there any "yellow pages" for St Gallen? Or something else?

Best regards

Re: Finding a person from St. Gallen

"Yellow pages" would be a business directory - I assume you want personal.

In either case, if he/she has a phone number (that is not unlisted, not listed in someone else's name, etc.) you could look it up on http://tel.search.ch . It's for all of Switzerland, not just St. Gallen, so there could quite easily be more than one person with the same name.

Re: Finding a person from St. Gallen

Try www.local.ch - type in the name for "who/what" and St. Gallen for "where" and see if anything matches your info.

Then you will have to accept that this person, for whatever reason, probably doesn't want anymore contact with you

Re: Finding a person from St. Gallen

It's interesting how Zurirollt and franksinatra assumes the person don't want any contact, you have no idea about how our contact were before this happened. Pathetic.

Thank you Medea and mathnut for the help.

Re: Finding a person from St. Gallen

Sorry to hear about your situation.

We can only suspect what could have happened, but we are hardly qualified to make judgments about you and your friend’s relationship. The members here seem to assume your friend broke off contact and they make an important point. Though it must be painful to hear this, please keep in mind, people on the internet (as in real life) do not always have your best interests at heart. This means you have to brace for the possibility that your friend was in fact not a real friend. On the other hand, there are situations when real friendships evolve online and one person is cut off from the internet due to personal (e.g. health) reasons.

Not sure what you mean by her email account and Skype were ‘out of use’. Do the emails get returned, or do they go through but are not answered? Some E-Mail providers like Yahoo and Outlook shut down inactive accounts (typically after three to nine months of inactivity). From my own experience, Skype accounts still work after they have been closed, thus your contacts’ messages go through, even though you cannot effectively sign in. Would be helpful to know if your friend had a Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. If yes, you might be able to contact her friends there.

I can imagine it is hard enough to grieve such a close friend (if something had happened), but it must be incredibly painful to deal with the uncertainty. It is very unfortunate that you and your friend have no friends in common whom you could contact.

However, irrespective of what you do, I hope you will not to carry this burden alone. Whether you decide to further investigate, or make peace with it, you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t connect with loved ones or seek out support groups to start the healing process for unresolved grief. Wishing you well and hoping things look up for you.

Re: Finding a person from St. Gallen

Assuming you have never met this person, (Because you write: him/her) is it possible that he/she does not exist, and you were being groomed by a criminal from Nigeria?

There is the possibility to write to the village/town of the last address he/she gave you, and ask the administrators if the person is living there. You can find a website of the village/town, as every town in Switzerland has their website http://www.<town name>.ch

For St Gallen http://www.stadt.sg.ch/home/verwaltu...wohneramt.html

postal address,
Einwohneramt
Rathaus
9001 St.Gallen

Telefon +41 71 224 44 00
Fax +41 71 224 51 08

E-Mail address einwohneramt@stadt.sg.ch

Some towns give out this information, others don't. Some (if the person does exist) write to the person to ask their permission to give out their data first, giving the individual the choice of whether they wish to be contacted or not.

Interesting. I have been trying to locate a distant relative in Germany for years with only her maiden last name and location. The Standeamt explained that I do not have a "berechtigtes Interesse" (legitimate interest) as a distant relative, let alone a "rechtliches Interesse" (legal interest). Because I don't fall into one of those two categories, the Standesamt will not release information on her until 30 years after her death. Possibly I just have the misfortune to deal with a Standesamt that follows the rules.

Possibly. But that's in Germany. In Switzerland there will be different rules for this.

Indeed. And it may vary from canton to canton. Ct. Schwyz will release personal data for an individual/ individuals if the requesting person can demonstrate a "legitimate interest" (berechtigtes Interesse):

§ 12 Abs. 2

Re: Finding a person from St. Gallen

Since the OP is looking for a person in St Gallen, this is the relevant cantonal law regarding privacy of personal data held by the government. Point e) is most relevant and requires that the requesting person must demonstrate that his/her interest outweighs the right to privacy to the individual's personal data:

III. Bekanntgabe von Personendaten
Art. 11
Personendaten
a) Grundsatz
