Washing clothes with no washing machine!?

Hello there,

My temporary accomodation when I arrive will have no washing machine or dryer. Where can I go to get my work shirts and trousers washed!? And what can I expect to pay? I will be located near Sihlfeld.

Thanks!

Re: Washing clothes with no washing machine!?

You need a bucket, a box of handwash soap, rubber gloves, hot water and about half an hour.

While scrubbing, allow your mind to wander. It's quite nice, actually.

Do not twist delicate items.

Are you sure? If it's in a block of apartments there's bound to be a communal laundry room available I would think.

Why not ask your employer or the landlord?

Btw, is it in Seefeld or Sheffield?

Re: Washing clothes with no washing machine!?

The advert states:

The weekly cleaning service plus a change of bedding is included in the rent. Further we are checking twice a week the bath towels and refill the hand soap dispenser. We offer a laundry service by request for a fix rate of CHF 250 per month.

So I'm assuming it doesn't have the facility. And if you want to use the offered service, you pay that rate. Unless of course, that is another option to using the in-house facilities. I will check with the company.

Not all blocks of flats actually have them! There are quite a few in and around Zurich that don't! This often occurs when the destined use of an apartment is changed from office to residential for example, yet the rest of the building remains offices etc. Ideally a washing machine and/or a tumble dryer should be installed in the flat in question. The landlord is not obliged to install them though! Unfortunate yes, but it does happen. Hence the fact that launderettes do still exist!
I have a friend who lives in a flat in a block which is almost entirely offices, with shops and a restaurant on the ground floor. On the upper floors it's very quiet during the weekends! For the washing machine, they bought and installed one themselves.

Sounds like it doesn't then - at least not that you can get at yourself.

Question is would you spend as much at a self service launderette in a month as you would paying for the service?

I really hope not. I will have approximately five shirts and two pairs of trousers to wash per week. I will probably do all of this in one go, once a fortnight. But worst case, I might just have to pay the service charge.

Well spotted! The full text reads:

It's a serviced apartment (business apartment) so there's a bit more included in than a typical short-term rental. I've queried it, will see what the response is. I think I'll be paying the CHF250 by the looks of it. Not the end of the world. May use the laundrette first to see how things go.

Thanks for all the responses!

Bed linen and towels are included in the rent so it would only be they underwear and socks.
These are easy to hand wash in the sink and hang up to dry.

Thankfully bedding and bath towels are supplied, or the OP would need a big bucket!

Re: Washing clothes with no washing machine!?

Panic over. The building does in fact have both a washing machine and a dryer. The 'we do it for you' service was additional.

As such, I have gone ahead with the application.

Thanks!

Re: Washing clothes with no washing machine!?

I usually wash my clothes by hand. You need a basin and detergent. Put your clothes into the basin, fill it with water, put a little bit detergent in it, rubb clothes; repeat all of the steps without detergent. after a few minutes, your clothes should be clean.
