Book lovers, help please.

I have quite a few books and I've made over the years a list of the titles, because I found myself buying the same book twice. So now, when I go to a book shop, I always carry this list with me.

I feel it's time for me to join the 21st century, so I'm hoping that some of you would know of an app that puts titles and names in alphabetical order, or some other magical and mysterious cyber thingie that lets me keep a list in alphabetical order.

Have I already mentioned that keeping things in alphabetical order is very important to me? My life would lose its meaning, alphabeticaly speaking.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Jumbled up in Aargau.

Re: Book lovers, help please.

Feel you pain- but can't really help. Editors know that we remember the book cover, and so they publish the same book again and again with a different cover- to confuse us (oldies ).

BTW a great site to buy on-line if you'd rather not use Amazon-

After reading your request,
because I'm a helpful
chap, I tried to think if I knew of an app that
did such a thing.
Every website I visited
fobbed me off with the wrong kind of thing, leaving me
grumpy.
Heading over to different parts of the
internet, I found
just the thing! Unfortunately, just at that moment, I
killed the tab,
leaving me unable to remember the name of the website.
Moaning to my wife was
no use at all, as she was busy cooking
or seeing to the children. Nevertheless, I thought I'd
post something here, so you could be
quietly
reassured that at least I'd tried. Perhaps
some other member will find some
terrific app which does just the thing, though I suspect it's
unlikely, being a
very specific kind of request
which few developers are likely to consider profitable, their eyes always on the
x and
y axes of rising profits against time. I don't blame you for looking, though, and I must admit that I admire your
zeal.

I don't know of any app (not strong on that front), but a spreadsheet like Excel comes to mind. You can then sort your list according to the alphabetical order (and as many additional criteria you like).

How about something like this?

Barcode scanning seems like a must, couldn't imagine typing everything in...

No, haven't used it, that's what turned up with a quick scan on the subject. I'm assuming Android, since nothing was specified.

Re: Book lovers, help please.

A simple Excel spreadsheet will do that. Just use an alphabetical sort.

You could export the list to something else to make it look nicer.

Take my eldest one with you when you go book shopping next time. He's got a fantastic memory .

Otherwise, why not try the ebook - thingies?

Re: Book lovers, help please.

Great suggestions all, thank you.

I haven't got a tablet, but I'm hoping to get one from the old fat guy with the white beard and red suit, aka Mr Marple.
Then I thought I could keep a list on it and just enter new books as I buy them and it would do the alphabetical stuff on its own.

I will investigate all your ideas tomorrow, and thanks again. A lot.

Checked iTunes as your request got me curious. There is an app called MyLibrary (available in Lite free version) that could possibly answer your needs. Interested to try it myself, but will have to wait since most of our books are in storage.

Re: Book lovers, help please.

I don't use it as much now, but when I had masses of swimming lists I found good old simple EXCEL great for sorting stuff. As vuachère said, you could sort your list by author's surname, author's Christian name, by subject, editor, or single words of the book title if you split them into columns first. Little macros for each function would make it even easier to do each time you add a new book. And the macro could also make a copy of your list on another sheet which would be nice if you, like me, just occasionally hit the wrong button and muck up your lovely list completely.

Re: Book lovers, help please.

Librarything.com - we've used it for years, and have more than 1000 books in it. I think it's a US $25 fee for life. You can search books by isbn, off amazon, etc, and catalogue your physical, kindle and audio books. Reminds me that i need to update ours.

Nice idea!

Being something of a Luddite, I have yet to embrace the whole organization-by-app Zeitgeist. My solution to the OP's problem is quite old school: I just call my neighbor and ask if I already have the book in my library, or not.

You see, one day my neighbor asked if she could borrow a certain title. I couldn't remember if I had that one, so said I'd check my library and get back to her. She said, "Oh but you do have it, it's in the middle book case, half way down".

Apparently she can see into my library window from her house and, curious as to my reading tastes, got out the binoculars for a better look.

Maybe this anecdote should go in the 'Oppressive Switzerland' thread...

Re: Book lovers, help please.

When we moved here in 2007 with craploads of books, we used this to catalogue them. I bought a cheap hand scanner (now you could use a phone camera) to enter isbn to search.

I like the nosy neighbor better though.

Re: Book lovers, help please.

I would create an online library or kind of database ...

All you need to do is, scan each and every book (page by page) and save them into PDF format.

However, the drawback of this method might be that:
- it may take you 100,000 or more man-days to complete it and your offsprings will need to continue with your copying heritage,
- in about 100 years or less PDF might be extinct file storing format.

Other than that, if it needs to be accomplished in one's lifetime then online apps is the way to go. In any event, good luck with the new "library-ancestry" project.

Re: Book lovers, help please.

I'd use Excel.

I did that for phone numbers years ago, when i used to lose phones all the time. Easy to update. Also you could put a column on there if you lend books out.

A friend of mine actually employed me to do it for his hundreds of vinyls. He still uses that list 10 years later.
