I've been looking into getting a new compact digital camera, ahead of the new ski season starting. I've been leaning heavily towards the a Casio 'card' camera, since it takes excellent movies. We had great fun filming each other crashing our snowboards with a similar camera last season.

Does anybody know the best place/way to get a digital camera here? Inter Discount in my experience are very expensive, but I'm not sure what other shops there are.

Alternatively, would the tax on an import (via the web) make it pointless getting it abroad?

I agree. I used www.toppreis.ch to look for a good deal an a digi Canon and found not only one with a low price but also one that also had an actual store in Puls 5, so I saved on shipping charges.

And speaking about shipping charges, always check them when using toppreis as sometimes the price will be lower but with the shipping added the price becomes costlier than other stores also posted.

Don't import. Get the camera in Switzerland. If you have problems with it, chances are that you have to return it to the originating country.

Jordana, I bought a copy of a Nikon camera battery from Ricardo.ch for a fraction of the Nikon price. It claimed to have a higher capacity than the original, and was about 11chf including post.

I think you'll maybe find the savings, the wait for the auction to end and the fact that Interdiscount and other stores will sell generic versions of batteries negate the wait for mail order/ricardo

You can pick anything order from this shop in Zurich near Hardbrucke rather than getting it delivered.

Don't bother getting it abroad. Warranties on consumer-level devices will almost certainly not be honoured outside the country you bought it, and digital cameras appear to be one of those weird things that are actually _cheaper_ here than most places.

I bought a Canon IXUS 75 as we were leaving Australia just before new year (literally, picked it up on the way to the airport). About a month later I managed to drop it onto a cement floor and break it. Naturally, the Australian warranty was worthless here so I went to get a new one - I picked up an identical camera from Digitec (highly recommended - I've been there several times, everyone I've ever spoken to has had excellent English) for about CHF50 less than I paid in Australia (and I paid well under retail there). I was surprised, to say the least.

EDIT: Note that digitec have free delivery if you don't want to go into the store.

If you know exactly what you want, www.digitec.ch is probably one of the cheapest. If you want to have a look at different cameras, I'd go to Mediamarkt.

It's worth comparing prices!
