Contact Lenses

So I have finally decided to start getting my eyes tested in Switzerland, instead of waiting till I go back to the UK to sort it, and I was happy with the test cost (more than UK but not too bad) but couldn't believe how expensive the contact lenses were (200 CHF for 6 months)!! I went to Visilab...does anyone know if they are more expensive than other opticians, or is this just how much it costs in Zurich!

My insurance will only cover me for 300CHF every 3 years and thats only going to cover 1 test and 6 months lenses!!

What does anyone else do for theirs?

Thanks

Re: Contact Lenses

From my experience with glasses, Visilab is one of the more expensive opticians so I changed to Fielmann and saved a small fortune. Now I get my contacts from there. Do not know how the contact prices compare, but suspect that it's similar. Service is really great as well.

Re: Contact Lenses

I go to an ophthalmologist due to serious myopia.

For glasses we all go to Fielmann, lots of choice, good service and the lowest prices. Also good guaranty policy, especially good given how the Troll treats his glasses.

For contact lenses I boy over the internet, last time I tried discount lenses.ch which was slightly cheaper than the site I previously used.

Apart from the ophthalmologist, everything is out of pocket, BUPA doesn't cover that sort of thing (doesn't matter that I'm half blind without lenses).

Re: Contact Lenses

Consider getting hard ones, instead of soft. The cleaning/storage solutions are easily obtained at the pharmasist's and a pair of lenses can last 10 years or more.

Re: Contact Lenses

I would also consider daily lenses instead of monthly ones and some eye drops. Using contact lenses dries your eyes a lot.

Visilab is for people with more money than sense. Smart people to go Fielmann.

I wear the extended wear ones that you sleep in....can't be doing with cleaning/changing them! Used to wear dailies but hated how much packaging I had to throw away!

Re: Contact Lenses

I used to get the typical Air Optix set with 3 sets of monthlies (so 6 lenses in total, that I use for 3 months) for less than 25CHF from ebay, and they come from a place in Poland or Czech (don't remember). They get home usually within a week.

I used to get the same lenses in Greece for over 35 EUR.

I never even tried asking for a quote in a Swiss shop, but 200 CHF seems steep. I just prefer to do some research online and get the lenses delivered to my door.

Do you have astigmatism on top of myopia and you need special lenses that are generally more expensive? Maybe you need special curvature or something?

After using lenses for over 10 years now, I would advise against hard ones. I personally prefer having a fresh set every month than get stuck with one set and have to maintain it.

I do have a more unusual curvature but I can get them from the UK for £16 for a box of 3! Think I might be better off just stocking up on them when I go home!

If you go regularly, that could make sense. I don't have an unusual curvature, just a very strong prescription, and for 12 pairs of Acuvue Oasys6 I paid 135 CHF shipping included. Since I don't go to Canada that often anymore, it makes more sense to go local for me. It's also a lot easier to get hold of a good eye doctor.

I didn't really want to endorse any particular one. I've tried various. I think some of them are associated with some of the retail chains, like Fielmann, Visilab, etc.

I have bought from:
http://www.linsenkontakt.ch
https://www.discountlens.ch
http://www.mrlens.ch

I only chose these because they have the particular Multifocal contact lenses I wanted - selection. May not offer the best prices online.

It's not a year, it's half a year. I wear them for 2 weeks and throw them away. At least in theory, most of the time I just forget about them...

I'm from Montréal, but I've lived abroad since 1997.

I get mine from an UK website, it's still a lot cheaper than Switzerland even with shipping + tax.
