Whats the best way to find models for a photoshoot?

Hi

I'm freelance visual designer and photographer. I am especially interested in Portrait, People and Documentary photography.

Whats do you think is the best way to get (nonprofessional) models for a photoshoot? Any suggestion? Website? I dont really know alot of people who'd be willing to be in a photoshoot.

Thanks a lot,
A.D.

Re: Whats the best way to find models for a photoshoot?

The easiest thing would be to promise them free photos/jpegs of themselves. Many aspiring models might be interested in this. People like to have a good quality portfolio photo for their CV. Some pregnant ladies like to have those arty photos of their bump, parents like to have gorgeous pics of their children etc...

For Portraits, you might try dropping into the local RAV office. They offer courses on how to put a CV together for jobseekers - class size is about 20. They might be interested, particularly if it doesn't cost them anything.

Same thing with any local School - every year kids need to apply for apprenticeships.

You might try asking at senior citizen's homes, too. Photograph the old people. And offer to come back on another day, to photograph them with their families and friends.

What's the spec for the shoot / models? Indoor or outdoor location? Are you male or female?

If you're male asking women to model, I'd get a female friend onside to do the asking and be present at the shoot. Way back when, I never had a problem getting models but my fellow male students did, so I used to recruit the models and sit in on the shoot, helping with the lighting, etc...

What are the photos for & what rights of use do you want? As Julia Roberts said in Pretty Women 'Cash works for me'.

Re: Whats the best way to find models for a photoshoot?

Thanks a lot for answer!

I male, about 30y and I shoot in studio. Of course I will give the "aspiring models" a CD with the best photos of the session (tfcd). The problem is, to finde aspiring models...

I don't do the calssic "CV Portrait" or "Pass Photo". I shoot mostliy in b/w and try to express an artistic ideas in the photos. So I think thay can not use the photos in a cv...

Thanks again for the Help!

Have you tried reaching out to fashion or beauty bloggers? In exchange for them modelling you could offer to shoot some outdoor fashion photos for their blogs or product shots for the beauty bloggers.

Re: Whats the best way to find models for a photoshoot?

If you pick up one of the photography magazines, or even look at the notice boards in camera shops there are always lots of agencies and individual models offering their services.

My aunt is an artist and in her 70s now.

She says when she was younger she frequently approached random strangers (mostly women) and although her success rate was low, she did get a stream of females willing to participate in both nude and non nude studio painting. She thought being a woman herself put the models at ease. But she says these days people are not as open to the idea and she has been in situations of verbal abuse so she only goes through agencies now.

The way she paints you can't easily recognize the person but I guess with photography that is an additional concern that puts potential models off.

I was once approached in the streets back home by an artist and his wife. Although I never did nude sittings for them (only sat for fully clothed sittings), I went on to become a model for an art class.

At first strange, it was curiously liberating to get used to sitting in a room of total strangers, some not much older than me, and shrug off some of the inhibitions that we grow up with in the Western world.

Likewise swimming in Ibiza in the reserved nudist beaches. How freeing. It's a shame we have so many hang-ups in our society.

I no longer sit, but at least I tried it, and as a student, the money came in handy at that time.

Re: Whats the best way to find models for a photoshoot?

Off topic.

Can someone explain to me why it is that one would go to a place where one can see other people's private parts and show one's own in public?

Sure, to each his own, but I just don't get it.

Not off topic. Approaching people in the street if you are a genuine artist and that person feels comfortable with you can lead to sittings/photoshoots.

Not sure I understand the second part of your response. I am assuming though that you are familiar with the concept of an art class? A teacher in a closed room with art students who study art and paint nudes as part of their training?

Because painting nudes is a core component of art that been done for thousands of years by history's greatest artists.

What about that well-known concept don't you "get", other than how to get over your own ingrained prudishness?

Oh my, the local bullies are quick to bite.

I did not make myself clear. I was referring to the highlighted part of the post above. Nothing to do with art classes. Hence offtopic.

Nothing to do with being prude, as I said to each his own, I don't get the appeal of nudist beaches.

To Britething, I also don't get the appeal of feeling superior to everybody else. Please b-tch.

I am glad you aren't shy to raise a question that interests you. Never mind the name calling, people get edgy here. I understand your question completely, despite me personally feeling differently about the issue than you do. Being reserved is not really part of my native culture, but get where you are coming from. We had crazy DDR nudist beaches available and it was rather gross, some things cannot be unseen. Everybody thought they looked like gods. Well, they were quite far from that.

We all have different personal ideas of modesty.

I think art is art. Stripping in public is that, stripping in public.

Re: Whats the best way to find models for a photoshoot?

And swimming on a secluded beach accessed by private boat with friends who happen to have no clothes on is not stripping in public.
There is a difference.

And to anyone who has never enjoyed that moment of pure freedom during which shedding one's clothes and inhibitions (whether or not one looks like a god, who cares) one feels an incredible 'légérete de l'être' which I can only translate as lightness of being - try it. It's not too late.
It was like an out-of-body experience.

The common theme here is nudity, and it isn't dirty or a crime.

Are you thinking along the Man Ray route or Robert Mapplethorpe, etc...? For the later, you really need a professional model and preferably over 25.

Exactly!

It's the same as George Stubbs spending months in slaughter houses studying horse carcasses so that he could learn the skeletal and muscle structure of the animal.

You have to learn to paint the human form nude before you can convincingly paint it clothed. Hands are the most difficult part of the anatomy to paint and photograph without them looking awkward.
