I can't say this enough: get professional cleaners in for the end-of-lease cleaning, and use a company that guarantees their work. It's the best money you'll spend.
I agree. And if the owner will clain, that it's not clean enough, send him to the cleaning company, which gives a warranty )
Another problem, as it was said before: some things, which were used by years, don't look so nice as new one even after professional cleaning. Hope the owner has an understanding... Otherwise can pick some money from deposit, which you left (

How old is the oven? Was it in pristine condition when you moved in? How many years have you lived there?

I am not completely sure how anyone can avoid cleaning an oven for a year.
I've managed to ignore the concept of deep-cleaning the oven for about ten years.... I came home from a trip to England late Tuesday evening to discover #2 son had kindly stripped out all the fittings and put them to soak in Potz oven cleaner. Then bu**ered off to his new place near Fribourg for the rest of the week!! You just wait until he comes home on Monday.

No question, the oven must be as clean as when it was new.

Repeated overnight applications of K2R oven cleaner will get it clean, but wear rubber gloves when cleaning the gunk off.
Everything else is a joke. You can sometimes scrape the burnt bits off with a blunt knife.

If you have the handbook, read it and remove the door to gain better access. Don't forget the roof!
The door can be dismantled and the glass cleaned inside, but it is difficult to re-assemble it!

If you use a steam cleaner be careful, remove the fuses (x3) or switch off the trip switches!
The steam can get behind the oven and convey the electricity and give you a shock!

In future, use oven roasting bags, you can even find them now in Switzerland.

What do you mean by 'now'? The Migros has sold them for over thirty years!!!

Depends on the renter; sometimes they turn up with white gloves!

You could always buy the oven internal components and replace the bad ones!
I think it's pretty strict in Swiss. Last time while I returned my flat, the agency really comes with white gloves!

But surely not if you have the sweep-over protocol? We paid over the odds for our place given the location we are in so perhaps that is why we are getting this bit of respite but given how life is we arent taking any chances!

Re: How clean does oven have to be for apartment handover?

We managed to get the oven almost entirely looking like new - except for the fan and area behind the fan air vent, at the back of the oven, which we can only clean if we open the back frame completely - we are afraid to do this in case something goes wrong.
Any advice about this?

We could not find the K2 stuff in the end, but we did try Dr. Beckmann and after two bottles of this along with a pan scrubber, we were able to clean off all of the burnt in stuff.

So now you dont have to it again for a few more years! This idea of deep cleaning the oven every year is crap and unnecessary

In my oven, that panel is supposed to be self cleaning.

What is this 'sweep over' cleaning?
That sounds like you would have already paid for final cleaning in advance when you took the place.

If not then I'd go with the advice from Village Idiot and get a company, or better still the company the landlord usually uses.

Re: How clean does oven have to be for apartment handover?

When we moved out of Basel, we agreed with the letters a "Pauschal" of SFr500 to be deducted out of the deposit for leaving the apartment "besenrein" - i.e. go through it once with a mop / hoover whatever.

As we were moving to Zurich and deep cleaning would have entailed several days off work once the apartment was empty plus having to figure out care for a small child not yet in school, we figured this was a reasonable exchange.

I assume this is the "sweep over".

Out of interest, a Swiss colleague living in Albisrieden recently had to move out of their apartment as the landlord planned to demolish and rebuild on the land. Even so they were subject to an end inspection and had to argue the toss over cleanliness etc for an apartment that was a week or two away from being bulldozed. Definitely a landlord's paradise is Zurich.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: How clean does oven have to be for apartment handover?

We have not made any special agreement with our landlord - we are just going by the list they sent us of what they expect to be clean and with regards the oven, they just specify that the internals be clean, with no dirty marks.

We are not going to try to open that back panel after all in case something goes wrong, or try to get our hand in there for fear of electric shock.

We have ticked all the boxes in the list.

We're moving house. But after this experience I think this should be done every 6 months minimum.
